about Clay Bennett...
The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

lol Clay! too funny!
There is a God.
Sarah Palin stated just moments before many cameras caught sight of her left hand where several written notes were in plain view, "This is about the people, and it’s bigger than any king or queen of a Tea Party. And it’s a lot bigger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter."
I'll bet right now, she wishes SHE had used a teleprompter.
I can't speak for President Obama, but I really have to wonder how hard he laughed when this, her latest in a long line of goofs, hit the blogosphere. What a colossal blunder. I wish I could muster up even a little sympathy for what she is going through at the moment.
Sarah Palin life lesson number 658 and 659;
658.) Stick your neck out far enough, and someone will chop it off, and;
659.) Mrs. Palin is living proof that we live in a truly digital world, where EVERYONE is watching, where someone is recording it all, and where hypocrisy can no longer hide.
I wonder, Mrs. Palin...Hows that hypey, crib-notey stuff workin' out?
http://www.towleroad.com/2010/02/watch-palin-caught-using-hand-as-cheat-sheet-at-tea-party-confab.html
I can just visualize a Post-It note above her sink faucet handles...Righty-Tighty Lefty-Loosey
Great depiction! Wonder if this was a technique she learned in HS?
I'll give Sarah credit- somewhere in her earlier years she learned the truth in the old saying that "a fool and their money will soon be parted". There are lots of sucker fools out there.
"So Sarah... What do you read these days?" "Anything I can find at hand."
Truth, is indeed, stranger than fiction. No one could have made this up. Although I wonder how long it will take someone to come up with something similar to, "Are you going to believe what she said, or your lying eyes?"
If this is the best the "Tea Party" could serve up, they might think of switching to something a bit stronger.
I take mine black, Woody
And our 57-state President who read his guest's lines off the Teleprompter?
Uh oh Woody said "black" You nasty racist you.
Palin would have been better off using a teleprompter with the two or three words on it since their use is "Opproved". I guess then the pundits would claim she can't read complete sentences.
This is as stupid and meaningless a cartoon as Clay as ever published.
Clay, once gain, is a master at piling on. This is yesterday's mockery.
You make fun of her...when 'The Man' reads a teleprompter when in front of six graders...? Give me a break...!
This cartoon is just a cheap shot.
It's not even a "blunder" of any kind. What constructive criticism or judgment should be bestowed on her to keep written notes on her hand? If she had written it down in a notebook she had carried around, would she receive the same scrutiny?
Or how is this all different than Obama reading, word for word, off a teleprompter?
I respect what Palin is trying to do, but I'm not a fan of her and definitely don't want to see her on a ballot any time soon, if ever. But jumping all over this is low-brow, even for Clay.
C:-)C:-)C:-)C:-)C:-)C:-)
Congratulations to Clay for the cartoon and all the useless comments which continue to legitimize Mrs. Palin. I am unsure if the left fears her because she is much closer to who Americans really are(yeah I know all your hypocrite name-callers disagree with that)or if you want to get her "in the mix" because she is likely not electable. Either way, your presentations which are supposedly cute, sarcastic and representative of one side only, make those who support her even more determined. Meanwhile, we will see how the public responds. There are elections coming and sooner than we think. Go America, put the right people in. Please do not infer by that I mean all have to be on the right of the whatever scale we pretend exists.
She wrote notes on her hand? That's the best you can do to discredit her? Clay you can do better than that. Your cartoon is second rate at best.
Recent DNA studies from the Human Genome project suggest that the gene linked to right-wing conservative ideology also carries the inability to understand irony.
You can't make fun of the other guy for having a teleprompter, then get caught with very basic pointer notes on your hand (anybody could have just used a piece of paper, except when they were making fun of the other guy for having notes), and then go back to saying "but wait, the other guy had a teleprompter." It doesn't work that way. It's the systemic hypocrisy, not the notes folks. Nobody cares about having notes except those that made a big deal out of the teleprompter (and Obama sure didn't have one of those when he ate the lunch of every republican congressman on TV).
It's like saying a democrat should resign for saying "retard" but limbaugh can say it because it is "parody." Or that you are a fiscal conservative but you put the town you are mayor of in gnerations of debt to build a hockey rink so you can have your house built for free. Or charging per diem to go to your own house. Or not reporting your cabin to pay property taxes, or quitting after half a term as governor etc., etc. You know that list is longer, and I know you know it, and you know I know you know it. Any chance she gets to milk a buck out of people she jumps all over it.
Come on folks, the hypocrisy is the joke here, not the notes on her hand.
I'm sorry if that seems "one-sided," it is just reality.
I love it that people are making fun of Palin because she wrote a note on her hand, yet the left says nothing about Obama having to use a teleprompter even when speaking to school children... Even more proof that the left has lost touch with reality.
When I was in college, I had to give several speeches. We were required to have an outline on paper but could not write down word for word at all. I can also remember a couple of times that I thought of something I really wanted to emphasize shortly before my speech, so I wrote a word or two on my hand as a reminder, much like an outline.
There is nothing wrong with using a teleprompter to give a speech when what you are saying is that important. At the same time there is nothing wrong with using notes on your hand, however an outline would have been better.
Obama and Sarah have something in common here though. Neither one of them do well when put on the spot without there notes or prompters.
I am not a big Palin fan myself, however, I do hate giving speeches and remember how nerve racking it was to do so. So I cannot condemn her for using a few notes or Obama for using a teleprompter.
Nicely said, Nurse.
Has anyone interviewed the 6th graders and asked them what they thought of the teleprompter?
I think what I would have said at that age was, "Gee, Geeky, Cool."
By the way, this is a repeat of a posting I put in on the last cartoon.
I was feeling ignored and so I want some attention payed to it. It fits today's cartoon and entries as well as a few in the past.
"I didn't get to the computer until this morning as I was at the VA.
I note that the split between political parties, ideologies, beliefs, tendencies, and whatever else, has widened.
Now I must question my paranoid belief that there is some malignant, over-reacting entity that follows the ancient rule..."Divide and Conquer".
Sigh! Blame it on lack of sleep and frustration.
Perhaps it is the Spaghetti monster? C:-)"
Humphrey-nice post. Irony indeed.
Clara- Keep the faith. His Noodliness is always watching over you. His design will soon be revealed.
Clara, You remind me of Lucy from Charlie Brown comics. Especially regarding the last cartoon at the end... Lucy always had a lot to say but never really said anything.

Please take the time to enjoy the House GOP Conference in Baltimore, Maryland questioning President Obama without notes or a teleprompter.
It's hah-larious how he struggles all of the way through unable to answer a single question.

If a nurse wrote "there" on my chart, when they meant to write "their" or "they're". I would question their credentials.
Nurse, if you must pick on someone, pick on one of the men.
Clara has done nothing to you.
Whattsamatta with you? Didn't your mama teach you to have respect for your elders?
You know...it's funny. Every time Clay posts a Sarah Palin cartoon, this forum fills with strangers for a day or two, and then they are on their way...
It's the tea-partiers. They are comin' to get us and take us away...oh my.
Obama cleverly uses a teleprompter, Palin uses hand notes and Bush made it up as he went, even inventing words if none came to mind. I disagreed with most of what GW said, but I for one miss his always a surprise speeches.
eeeeeek, I have watched that video a couple of times. Masterful job by him.
I am watching his WH briefing right now, taking questions from the media. One note he made is if his Department nominees are not acted upon and appointed he will use the recess rule to appoint them. About time in my opinion.
Wow Al, I'm surprised that your liberal mind allowed you to make such a sexist comment in your 1:09 post. What does it matter if Clara is a woman? Granted, I did pick up a little bit of a humerous tone, but if you weren't trying to be funny, I am surprised by you saying that. I guess you cannot predict what a person, even as consistant as you typically are, will say on this site.
alprova is right on target with that assessment.
It seems that some posters have totally missed the point. Palin was making fun of Obama using a teleprompter but yet had some prompting of her own albeit very low tech. It's called "hypocrisy."
Hey, Sarah, it's the 21st century. It's OK to use a teleprompter. It is known as TECHNOLOGY. Geez...at least use note cards.
Let's see
Palin - a very few words written on her hand - so what.
Obama - reading lengthy material provided by speechwriters - so what.
This whole discussion is silly. Each of them does what they do. Either method can cause problems for the speaker. Doesn't make either of them right or wrong - just different.
I watched the press conference too. I heard nothing new. He ought to have the delivery down pat by now since it's basically the same answers to the same questions he's been trying to explain for months. Seems to me members of the dem party are a bigger problem for him than Palin is. And FYI, the thought of Palin running for President makes me cringe.
Alprova,
And boy am I old!
I'm glad I joined this blog. I'm getting a thick skin.
Besides, I'm probably going into my second childhood, It's agin the law to spank me!
AND... I can always claim "emotional abuse." C:-)
Nursey,
I carry a sign when I go to the hospital and hang it over my bed...PATRONIZING PEOPLE IS THE PITS!
A LOT of you posters do that...patronize!
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek I made a mistake... wow someone flog me. Maybe eeeeeek should change his/her name to Jesus Christ if he/she thinks he/she is so perfect. By the way eeeeeek, go ahead and question my credentials, you just may be surprised.
My deepest apologies for making such a blunder!!!!
And Alprova, thanks for that chastisement. But that really was in fun as I hope your comment was. Did you read Clara's post on yesterdays cartoon at the end. All the phobia talk just reminded me of Lucy.
My apology to Clara.
Going back to the point of the toon. I have more respect for a person that can give a speech without a prompter even if he/she has to use some "hand" written notes.
Sailorman wrote: "...Obama - reading lengthy material provided by speechwriters..."
Uh uh....
Obama relies very little on speechwriters. The man spends days working on his speeches. Prior to his election, the man would lock himself into a hotel room for days at a time to get a speech just right.
And as we know...it pays off big-time, to have the gift of gab.
Alprova, please share where you found this info regarding Obama and his speech writing. I truly find that hard to believe.

"It seems that some posters have totally missed the point. Palin was making fun of Obama using a teleprompter but yet had some prompting of her own albeit very low tech. It's called "hypocrisy.""
There's a huge difference in having to read your speech from a teleprompter and writing 3 words on your hand. Palin posseses the ability to speek off the cuff, something Obama has never been able to do. Does that make her a better leader than him? No. But drawing a comparrison between reading a speech from a telepropter and 3 words is absurd.
I have no doubt Obama contributes at least a framework for his speeches. If you believe he personally scribes every word of his "soaring rhetoric", I've got some nice beachfront property for you.
Here ya go:

Nurse, http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1837368,00.html
Obama is well known for the time he spends researching ideas for presentation. You would expect this from a person who taught constitutional law.
You've got to be kidding me. This really happened? She wrote on her hand? No way. I have never seen anything that would disqualify a person from living--let alone running for office--any more than this. She really did this!? She is clearly a moron. I can't believe she wrote something on her hand! Wow. Not really.
Interesting what is fodder for your comics. No mention of Rahm's retarded comment. I guess stuff like that isn't really noteworthy. Now hand writing...
Now that is the kind of stuff that matters.
Sailor-no doubt he does not write all the material of his speeches. But I would be willing to bet he contributes significantly to any major outline of his speeches,
Say what you will about him, he is a very intelligent individual.
Yeah I forgot - he's a god among men - while Palin is devil herself (note the PC)
Hotdiggity, that is a very outdated article. He was not even president yet when that was written. Being president changes just about everything you do. In modern times there has not been a president who wrote their own speeches. And I dare say that some of them even had some intelligence. If he wrote every speech then that would be all he does since he gives one just about every day like he was running for office again.
But thanks for the effort anyway.
I miss canary. Wonder where she is???
Hotdiggity, thanks for posting the link to that article. It was the very one I read as well.
"Hotdiggity, thanks for posting the link to that article. It was the very one I read as well."
Sure it is. It's the first one that comes up if you google "who writes Obama's speeches?"
Try looking a little further.
The President seems to think we have dead bodies serving in the Navy. Calls corpsman a "Corpse man" 3 times.
I guess Clay missed this one.

That's about the calibur of response I expected. Some of you people would argue with a Yugo, if you could find one and it would communicate with you.
It was written a little more than a year ago...
None of us truly knows how much he contributes to his speeches, but given that the man completed an education, with honors, that most people only dream of, and given the fact that speech writing has been proven to be an area of expertise, I tend to think he is deeply involved with what comes out of his mouth as President.
Of course you don't believe it. It's contrary to your belief that the man is only there because___.

Ah, Sarah . . . .
In the words of Robin Williams, "The gift that keeps on giving."
I wonder if Fox puts black drapes over the teleprompters when she's in the studio.
Nurse, I never implied he wrote every one of his speeches. And yes, he does not have time to do that.
My point was you would expect from a person of his intelligence, grasp of issues, and the fact that he wrote two books, he would play a major role in crafting his speeches. Especially his major speeches.

Yawn.
Ohhh...I'm glad that paboom pointed out that Palin was giving a "speech." I had never viewed any of her "off the cuff" comments as being a speech. I have been enlightened.
If Howard Dean can get ousted for a rally scream by the media I'm really glad to see media is not ignoring she's not presidential if she can't remember four things. Good grief I shutter to think this retard could of been running our country.
alprova: That is a very interesting site you directed us to. This is a comment left under the article you linked us to, and I've got to say its perfect:
"I hate the woman as much as the next hardcore liberal, but highlighting this and making it appear much bigger than it is, is stretching it a bit too much to the borders of absurdity. Writing a few words in your palm is nothing compared to using a teleprompter EACH AND EVERY TIME (cue Jon Stewart's mocking of Obama's use of the teleprompter in a sixth grade classroom). I have given dozens of speeches to small and large groups, and I too have scribbled little notes (when I didn't have time to edit my cue cards) on my hand to remind me of something. This is seriously very petty on the part of us liberals to go after Palin like this. It almost appears we're scrapping the bottom of the barrel to find some way of "getting" her. I'm sure there are more substantial issues that we can really single out for a real debate." (posted by HITEN on toweleroad.com)
Even a "hardcore liberal"thinks making fun of this is idiotic. I'm not yet sold on Palin and honestly her last few remarks have not impressed me, but the more the media takes cheap shots like this the more its going to make her stronger.

You might want to lay off disparaging the intelligence of others until you get your own house in order.
SCOTTYM - LOL....That's awesome bud.
The sad thing is she just might be the next President.
Face it. Palin is over-the-top better prepared than The Fool currently warming the Oval Office chair. Which is a sad commentary on The Fool...
rolando,
She's coming along, and seems to be catching her stride. I'm not her greatest fan, but I'd much prefer her over the dipstick currently occupying the Oval Office. At least she believes in the greatness of our nation, and rejects the Statist ideas that the current dummy is so enamored with. It's a character thing, she has it, Odumbo does not.
I had dinner with two die hard republicans tonight. They were joking about the hand-note and over a high-five, lamented the note wasn't on her inner thigh.
She's attractive. I get it. She's republican. I get it.
My friends, one a physician, and one an attorney for a major insurer, could not articulate policies of hers they like, just her spunk and attitude... and inner thigh thoughts.
I'm not saying she has no substance, but time and again, it seems that's not what her supporters are looking for.
They're looking for sound bites. They're looking for a way to make the Republican Party attractive, if not with policy, then with actual looks and attitude.
I, for one, do not blame her for writing a note on her hand. We all need reminders. The cartoon is funny, given the political perspective from which it is written. I find a lot of Obama cartoons funny, though few published by Clay poke fun at him.
Those who take too much offense at this need to get a life.
I, for one, think she is a political cartoon in the same manner as Reagan, Clinton, Bush, Lincoln, Churchill... the list goes on.
She is distinct. She has our attention. She is an easy and deserving target.
I, for one, have no faith in her. She believes in American Exceptionalism, which is an egotistical political theory which I believe will lead us astray from our corp princicples.
But I can't always be right. History could prove me wrong.
Rolando wrote "Face it. Palin is over-the-top better prepared than The Fool currently warming the Oval Office chair."
Then why isn't she President. Two points - It doesn't take a genius to know that the Conservatives will make significant gains in the midterm elections, and then blow it. It's not that they are better, it's just that they are the alternative(heck, a broken watch is right twice a day). Two - I lost $10 on you the other night during the superbowl. You only said "Dear Leader" four times in your post, I bet you'd say it at least eight. Yeah your a drinking game, but I still love ya.
Palm-Prompter (gets me everytime)

Scotty regarding Sarah you say, "It's a character thing, she has it, Odumbo does not". You are kidding, right? Right?
Gotta love the character of a person who quits her elected job as governor to chase the dough. Of course she probably felt a "higher calling". Hmm, seem to recall our last Prez who did not complete some type of government service.
But hey, both of those mental giants waved a mean American flag.
Character, yeah, I get it.
Rolando says, "Palin is over-the-top better prepared than The Fool currently warming the Oval Office chair".
Better prepared in what way? Could you name some specifics, not generalities or platitudes, in regards to her being better prepared than Obama? I'm waiting with bated breath.
The bottom line is she had "tax cuts" written on her hand to remind herself (presumably) that it's an issue she approves.
That's like me writing "brush teeth" on my own hand to remind me when I wake up.
Hotdoggity wrote,
"Hmm, seem to recall our last Prez who did not complete some type of government service."
Hmm, you seem to be misinformed.
Maybe that is your problem. Do you believe everything the talking heads on TV tell you?
Johnny-Good one, LOL.
SCOTTYM- "Do you believe everything the talking heads on TV tell you"?
No, I just disbelieved a lot of what Bush said. And his signature smirk irritated me as much as Palin's wink wink, LOL.
Wonder what Sarah is "preparing" to do next? Please Sarah, run in 2012, wink, wink.
I've seen Obama spudder and studder so many times, when he didn't have his teleprompter, that even Mel Tillis wouldn't be able to translate for him. Also, how about Obama's gaffs such as his 57 States, giving Eau Claire, WI state hood or saying corpseman instead of corpman. Obama is just an articulate man who is just an empty suit for the Chicago political machine. He gets up every morning and is told what he will do and say that day. They then will print the words on Obama's teleprompter and then he then reads the words perfectly. If Obama were in a debate with Sara "The Barracuda" Palin, she'd make a fool out of him
Alprova sheepishly says, "That's about the calibur of response I expected. Some of you people would argue with a Yugo, if you could find one and it would communicate with you."
All I did was ask you for your source. But once again you are unable to come up with a reliable source for your comments. I wish I had a dollar for every time you did this, I would be wealthy.
When you argue, you shouldn't argue with someone "above your paygrade."
Most of you have totally missed the point. She slams Obama for using a teleprompter. Says he shouldn't need one. Then she writes on her hand and let's the cameras capture it. By her own standards she shouldn't need notes. I liken this thinking to the politicians who run on family values and live the opposite.
How much more ridiculous can we get? Yesterday, Robert Gibbs shows up at a White House briefing and has the words "hope" and "change" written on his hands in mockery of Palin. Is that what our country is being reduced to? Our politicians are too worried about getting in a kindergartner type "jab" at the opposing party or speaker? Obama uses a teleprompter for his speeches, so he can say, word for word, what he wants to say in each speech. Sarah Palin used a couple words written on her hand to make sure she remembered to hit on a couple points while speaking. Very, very few public speakers do not use notes of some kind (whether it be a couple words, symbols, or charts) to help them remember all the points they want to hit. Some people like the whole speech in front of them. It takes just as much talent to effectively deliver a speech while reading it (which if not done right sounds very boring and impersonal) as it does to effectively give a speech by memory and talk about everything you planned on. About the only public speakers I know of who do not have to use any of these are the ones who go around to conferences day after day giving the exact same speech to each group. So, seriously, can we, as a nation, grow up and focus on issues that matter and not worry about how our politicians and spokespeople choose to remember what they are going to say?
whoknows- The point was that Sarah had just made a disparaging remark about Obama regarding his use of a teleprompter while using her palm as a Palm-Prompter.
The point is hypocrisy, and being caught at it in real time while issuing her hypocritical statement.
That and the fact that the Repubs have been issuing their "kindergartner type "jab" at Obama for quite some time regarding a teleprompter.
I agree with you on the notes and use of a prompter to aid a person during a speech. It is an aid, nothing more, nothing less. The point is just don't be caught being a hypocrite about it.
hotdiggity,
I'm still waiting, re:

Do tell.
There are numerous sources. Try Google. But here are a few things he could provide.
Wiki has a good overview, with resources. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W...
I could go on.
HD,
"But here are a few things he could provide."
LOL!
Dreaming up a crazy theory and demanding that the object of your derision provide proof that it is wrong is a bit silly. This whole thing kinda blew up in a few people's faces when the documents it was based upon were shown to be forgeries, didn't it? Gee, why did Dan Rather retire so early?
You made the accusation, you need to provide the proof.
P.S. Google and Wikipedia are not your friends if unbiased information is your quest.

There has been an increase of male Teabaggers in doctor's waiting rooms throughout the country because their penises have been breaking out with black splotches.
A source from the CDC said there is no cause for alarm. Seems they have been writing notes in their palm and have been pretending that the ink covered hand belongs to Sarah Palin.
eeeek,
Actually, since you brought up the vulgar term, one who is engaged in "teabagging" gets their thrills by dipping the jewels into the mouth of a subservient non-teabagger such as yourself. Do you enjoy it? I'm sure your "bagger" does.

Dispute it if you wish. It appears you will believe something without proof.
"Google and Wikipedia are not your friends if unbiased information is your quest".
So, Google and Wikipedia are biased sources of information?
Scotty, that has to be the most ludicrous statement I have seen you make.
Its pretty obvious where you get your "unbiased information".
HD,
Concerning Google.
How about you go to Google and type in "Climategate" and see how many hits you get. Then cruise over to Bing, or any other search engine which does not ride on top of Google and try the search. You'll be surprised, until you realize that Al Gore is on the Google board and they have ZERO problems censoring search results to further their ideological aims.
Wiki is much the same, as control of controversial subjects is placed in the hands of a few zealots who babysit thier assigned subjects 24-7 and scrub any non-PC information immediately.
The fact that you do not realize this probably has a lot to do with your being misinformed about various subjects.
Touche Scotty. The mindless puppets continue their death dance and cannot debate with honesty because they don't search out the Truth.
