The Appalachian Mountains are not just for hiking. In winter, the upper reaches are known for snow-covered slopes that draw families for snow skiing and tubing.
If the XXI Olympic Winter Games have you thinking about snow sports, there are two resorts within a couple hours’ drive of Chattanooga (in Mentone, Ala., and Gatlinburg, Tenn.), as well as several in western North Carolina, which boasts the highest elevations in the Southeast.
Although Georgia lacks a ski resort, it does have Snow Mountain at Stone Mountain Park, which has a 400-foot tubing hill and 30,000-square-foot play area.
