Georgia holds millions in unclaimed money

ATLANTA — The state of Georgia is holding on to nearly $985 million that rightfully belongs to state departments and taxpayers, according to the Georgia Department of Revenue.

”In these tough economic times, Georgians cannot afford to just let their money sit in a government account,” Rep. Tom Weldon, R-Ringgold, said in a media release Friday.

Under the Unclaimed Property Act, when an owner cannot be contacted to receive money or property from another individual or agency, the state holds onto it until the owner is notified or contacts the state to claim the money or property.

Uncollected taxpayer money in the state treasury cannot be used by the state, but the state can collect interest on it, Department of Revenue Commissioner Bart Graham said at a budget hearing last week

“But people can always go back and collect it,” Commissioner Graham said. “I actually found something the other day that was in my name from eight years ago.”
