Deputy arrested on sex charges

A Hamilton County sheriff's deputy assigned to work in the schools has been arrested and charged with having improper contact with a student.

In early November 2009, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office was notified by the East Ridge Police Department about allegations of improper contact between Deputy Jeff Edwin Baker and a juvenile female, said sheriff's spokeswoman Janice Atkinson.

An investigation was initiated and has resulted in the arrest of Deputy Baker who will be charged with two counts of aggravated statutory rape.

The investigation showed that one incident occurred at East Ridge Middle School where Deputy Baker was assigned as the School Resource Officer. The second incident occurred at a local apartment complex, Ms. Atkinson said.

Deputy Baker has been suspended with pay, Ms. Atkinson said.
