House passes education reform plan

NASHVILLE - The Tennessee House voted 83-10 tonight to approve a sweeping overhaul of teacher tenure and evaluation laws that Gov. Phil Bredesen said are necessary to help the state compete for as much as $485 million in federal Race to the Top grants.

The bill now must go back to the Senate, which passed its version of the bill earlier today, to see if senators will agree with House-approved changes.

It is unclear whether senators would readily concur with the House bill or insist on their on version. If there is no immediate resolution, each chamber would appoint members to a conference committee to iron out differences.
