Helen Brantley

Helen Johnson Brantley, 84 a native Chattanoogan passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at a local hospital.

She was a member at First Calvary Baptist Church, 300 Bell Ave.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Daniel Hart Brantley; her father, Charles C. Johnson Sr.; her mother, Nettie Knauff Johnson; and a brother, Charles C. Johnson Jr.

She is survived by her son, John Carl Brantley, daughter-in-law Dianne Steil Brantley; granddaughter, Karla Brantley Wilson; grandson, Joseph Shawn Southerland; brother, Henry Clay Johnson; five great-grandchildren; and one niece.

The family request in lieu of flowers that a contribution be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Vernon Broome, 86, Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in a local health care facility.

Elizabeth Buckner

Elizabeth Louise Buckner, 79, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

She was born in Shady Dale, Ga., in 1930 to the late Edgar Harrison and Emma Ethel Buckner. She moved to Chattanooga in the 1940s and was a graduate of Red Bank High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services where she was a social worker for 24 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Edith (Warren) Smith, Sue (Arthur) Ellis; and a brother Harry (Elaine) Buckner.

Survivors: sister, Eunice Buckner Cathy, Chattanooga; brother, Durwood (Jane) Buckner, Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today graveside at Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Mary Jane Allen officiating.

The family will receive friends from noon until 1:30 p.m. today at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace.

William Carmichael

William Carmichael, 92, of Harrison, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at a local hospital.

Kathy Close

Kathy Phifer Close, of Signal Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

Kathy was born in McMinnville, Tenn., where she graduated from City High School and was a 1974 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was a senior cadet with the Girl Scouts in McMinnville and was a member of ZTA Sorority. Kathy was a schoolteacher in the Hamilton County School System, having taught at Birchwood Elementary before moving to Red Bank Elementary, for the past 35 years. She was named Teacher of the Year in 2007 for the Hamilton County School System and served as secretary for the Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher's Sorority. She was a member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church but was attending First Christian Church. Kathy lovingly taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at both churches.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Paul Mathes Close; two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth D. "Betsy" Close and her fiancée, Timothy Jackson, and Virginia M. "Ginny" Close and her fiancée, Josh Whitt; her parents, Harold and Mary G. Phifer, of McMinnville; and a brother, Steve Phifer; several nieces and nephews.

Services for Kathy will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Paul G. Rebelo officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park, "Duck Pond Cemetery."

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today at the North Chapel.

Mildred Ray Cox, 69, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2009, in a local hospital.

Juanita Daugherty

Juanita Potter Daugherty, 68, a former Chattanooga resident, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Ina Potter.

Survivors include her husband, Billy Dewayne Daugherty; son, Kenneth Dewayne Daugherty; daughter, Cathy Lynn Cranmer; brothers, James and Henry Potter; sisters, Robbie Smith and Betty Kyle.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Bishop Steve Lester and the Rev. Robert E. Daugherty officiating.

Interment will follow in Tyner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Scott Marshall, Robert Daugherty II, the Rev. P. Andric Daugherty, Johnny Shetter, Ronnie Knox, Jim Blythe.

Sybil Dill

Sybil Davis Dill, 80, of Hixson, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

She was predeceased by her husband, Bobby Mowery; sisters, Dot Norris and Carolyn Fairbanks.

Survivors include her husband, Wilson D. Dill; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Les Fauntleroy will conduct a graveside service in Chattanooga National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Joe Duncan

Joseph "Joe" Capers Duncan, of Chattanooga, 89, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

Joe was a tall, gentle man with a kind heart who touched all who knew him. His caring spirit led him to give generously of his time, energy and resources in helping others.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Joe was a native of North Carolina, born in Raleigh and living in Franklin and Asheville. He attended an Episcopal boarding school, Christ School, in Arden, N.C., graduating in 1937. He attended Biltmore College in Asheville, N.C., for one year.

In 1940, Joe was called into active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserves in Key West, Fla., and served on the destroyer USS Broome until May 1941, then as chief radioman at the naval radio station in the Canal Zone of Panama until 1945. In 1946, he was employed as engineer at Asheville radio stations WWNC and WISE, and as chief engineer at WNCA.

He returned to Duke University in 1947, graduating with a BS in electrical engineering in 1949 while at the same time serving as chief engineer at station USDUK in Durham.

In 1949, he was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in Jackson, Tenn., in the western area by the Division of Power Operations and in 1950 by the Division of Power Engineering in Chattanooga as supervisor of the radio section of the communications branch, where he remained until his retirement in 1983 after 34 years with TVA.

Joe met his wife, Esther, while they were both members of the church choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. An active church member at St. Paul's, Joe sang in the choir for 45 years, served on the vestry as Junior and Senior Wardens, and taught in the Sunday school for 17 years. He was also responsible for the installation of a radio broadcast and sound booth and procurement of control and recording equipment and training of control operators.

As an ardent lover of classical music, he sang in the Chattanooga Civic Chorus and briefly in the Bach Chorus. Joe was a longtime member of the Chattanooga Music Club and the English Speaking Union.

Joe was an avid amateur radio operator, receiving his license in 1936 as W4ECW, and making contacts with others around the world. He had been a member of the Asheville and Chattanooga amateur radio clubs.

Joe Duncan was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Norvin Cornelius Duncan and Mary Olivia Butt Duncan; his wife of 45 years, Esther Walton Gilbert Duncan; and brothers, Norvin C. Duncan Jr. and Horace G. Duncan.

He is survived by daughter Liz Duncan (Joe) Pratt, of Chattanooga; son, Tom G. (Nancy) Duncan, of Algonquin, Ill.; grandchildren, Tracy and Dan Duncan; sister, Jane Gibree of Ashland, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 305 W. Seventh St., Chattanooga, TN 37402.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the radio broadcast program at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Joseph A. Ford Jr., 63, of Ooltewah, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at a local hospital.

He was of the Baha'i faith.

He is survived by his wife; Sarah Faulkner; sons, Bill, Jody, Alex and Mark Ford, Donny and Derek Davis; daughters, Candace Ford Miller, Taylor Davies; parents, Joseph Allen Ford Sr. and Wanda Boyd Ford; sister, Janice Ford Renker; grandchildren, Mary Claire Ford, Amelia Grace Ford.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.

JoAnn Goforth

JoAnn Goforth, 71, a resident of Georgetown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, in a local healthcare facility.

She was a member of Bayside Baptist Church.

She was born in Chattanooga in 1938 to the late Jack Woody and Annie May Baker Woody.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Goforth Jr.; son, Johnny Goforth III; and two brothers, Ervin Woody and Edward Woody.

She is survived by her daughter, Kim Hill and husband, Charles, of Georgetown; one granddaughter, Stacy Hill, of Chattanooga; sisters, Pat (Alfred) Tankersley, Shirley (Eddie L.) Smith and Carolyn (David) Ledford, all of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. today, Jan. 25, 2010, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Eric Stitts officiating.

The Faith Fellowship Class will be honorary pallbearers.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 in Sunset Memorial Gardens with a white dove release ceremony concluding the service.

Clyde Henderson

Clyde A. Henderson, 60, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at his residence in Houston, Texas.

Clyde was born in Chattanooga, a son of J.B. and the late Lydia Henderson. Mr. Henderson was a 1967 graduate of Riverside High School and also served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart. Mr. Henderson was self-employed as an International Commerce Transportation provider.

Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia B. Henderson; grandparents, John and Beulah Baugh and M.C. and Tina Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy A. Henderson; children, Jae (Manuell) Philpott, Demond (Mia) Henderson, Timothy Thompson, Jr., Iraq; grandchildren, Demetruis Reeves, Wonyell Tanksley, Quintez Reeves, Alexis R. Henderson, Braelyn A. Henderson, and Aubrey C. Henderson, all of Chattanooga; parents, J. Mary Hyche

Mary Ruth Vaughn Hyche, 82, of East Ridge, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Hyche was born in Orme, Tenn., to Charlie and Lela Vaughn. She was a hair stylist for many years in the East Ridge area and was a charter member of the Green's Lake Road Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Roy Hyche; her parents; sisters, Clara Naomi Vaughn and Elizabeth (Betty) Weatherford; brothers, Charlie, Joe I. and C.J. Vaughn.

She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Tucker; sister and caregiver, Helen Vaughn; grandsons, Chris and Lee Hancock, and K. C. Combes; great-grandson, Jacob Grant Hancock; brother, Carl S Vaughn and his wife, Janice; sister-in-law, Jaunita Vaughn of Oregon; and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley Logan

Shirley Ann Logan, 69, of Harrison, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

Shirley was born in Chattanooga, was a 30-year resident of Texas before moving back to Chattanooga. She retired from a private doctor's practice in Grand Prairie as an LPN. Shirley was a member of Harmony Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was active in the Dorcas Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert G. "Butch" Logan; her son, Robert M. Logan; and her mother, Effie Hatfield.

Shirley is survived by her two children, Brenda (Eugene) Burks and Steve (Sarah) Logan; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel and 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday at Harmony Baptist Church.

John Malone Jr.

John Malone Jr., 82, of Cape Coral, Fla., passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.

He was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Athens, Tenn., and had been a Lee County resident since moving from Chattanooga in 1979. He retired from Charlotte County Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in 1990. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in Japan, and was an avid golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dessie Mae Burns Malone and John Henry Malone; sisters, Ruby Pace and Annie Patterson; brothers, Homer, Robert, James, T.R., Ross, Gene, Austin and Jack.

Mr. Malone is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Ann Malone; his daughter, Vicki (Kurt) Stagmaier, of Signal Mountain, and John Todd Malone, of Chattanooga; his sisters, Lois Brock and Kate Erickson, both of Chattanooga, and Nell Gambill, of Athens; and his everyday sister-in-law, Helen C. Bartley, of Cape Coral; his grandchildren, Lauren (Chris) Shadrick, of Birmingham, Ala., Erin Stagmaier, of Washington, D.C., Zachary, Benjamin and Braxton Malone, all of Chattanooga; great grandson, Clark Stagmaier, of Birmingham; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Duane Houston, of Clarksville, Tenn., officiating.

Margaret McCullough

Margaret Brown McCullough, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

Born and raised on a farm on Sand Mountain, Ala., Margaret spent most of her adult life in Chattanooga.

She was the daughter of the late Russell and Annie Freeman Brown; the wife of the late Col. Stanley H. McCullough Jr.; and the mother of the late Stanley "Poo" McCullough. She was also preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

Margaret was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her daughter and her husband, Ann and Paul Misura, Haleiwa, Hawaii; adopted daughter, Linda Spencer and friend Margaret Orr, of Chattanooga; nephews, Russell (Kappi) Brown and William (Beverly) Brown, Trenton, Ga., and Jerry (Judy) Austin, Birmingham, Ala.; along with several great-nieces and nephews and many friends.

Margaret resided in Shepherd Hills, where she and Stan built three homes and where she served as commissioner and mayor of the Ridgeside community she loved. Cooking was Margaret's specialty, and she was well-known for her pound cakes, cherry pies, cinnamon rolls and her barbecue ribs! She always had time to listen to her friends and loved ones and help with her quick wit and wisdom. She loved nature and could often be seen sitting in her window seat watching the birds and squirrels she fed every day and remarking how beautiful the world is.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Weyland Stewart officiating.

Clyde Moore

Clyde R. Moore, of Chattanooga and Scottsdale, Ariz., died on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Mr. Moore was retired from ABC Cleaners and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Hattie Reno Moore; brothers, Hugh and James Moore Jr.; and sister, Jurline Maynor.

Survivors are his wife of 59 years, Jessie Lynn Moore; sons Clyde Jr. (Sherry), Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Bruce (Susan), Scottsdale; three grandchildren, Chris Moore, Scottsdale, Jessica Moore, Louisville, Ky., and Megan Moore, Tempe, Ariz.; sisters, Elizabeth Owens, Chattanooga, and Lucille Baugh, Scottsboro, Ala.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in the chapel with the Rev. Dallas Beck officiating.

Peggy Claiborne

Peggy Cantrell Claiborne, 74, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, from a local hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Sept. 8, 1935 in Rabun, Ga., to the late Judge and Lillian Cantrell.

Mrs. Claiborne served as a registered nurse at Erlanger on the cardiac floor for nine years. She was a former substitute teacher for the Chattanooga School System.

Her love for the Lord was evident in her service and membership at Brainerd Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was a member of the choir and taught girls Sunday School Classes for many years. Mrs. Claiborne also led Monday morning devotionals (Devotionals with Peggy) at the Terrace on Mountain Creek, where she and her husband resided.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Harry A. Claiborne; daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Dyer and her husband, Carl of Chattanooga; sons, Stephen "Eric" Claiborne and his wife, Valerie of Ooltewah; "Phillip" Carl Claiborne and his wife Cheryl of Hixson; sisters, Dawn Johnson and Gail Dunn; and brother, Michael Cantrell all of Knoxville; grandchildren, Katie, Justin, Michael, and Renee; great-grandchildren, Elise, Elliott, and Elijah; several nieces and nephews.

Sherman Sherrill, Sr.

Sherman E. Sherrill, Sr., 88, of Soddy-Daisy, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010.

He was a US Marine veteran of WWII. He was a member of IBEW#175 for 65 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Connie Sherrill-Hoddad of Las Vegas, Nev.; and his sons, John, Edward, and Richard also of Soddy-Daisy; several grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

The funeral service will be 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Carl Hunsucker officiating.

Robert W. Summar, a prominent attorney and longtime resident of Chattanooga went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

He was born in Old Hickory, Tennessee to the late Lindsay and Lucy Summar. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University and he received his law degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He served as Assistant District Attorney in Chattanooga from 1958 to 1965 and then he served as Clerk and Master of Chancery Court in Hamilton County and he retired as Clerk of the Supreme Court of Appeals, Knoxville, Tennessee. He was a member of Rivermont Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by infant son, Robert Summar Jr.; and a daughter, Leslie Goetz.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Summar of Chattanooga; daughter, Lisa D'Andrea and her husband Tony D'Andrea of Chattanooga; son, Robert W. Summar II and his wife, Johnna Summar of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; son-in-law, Mark Goetz; eight grandchildren, John Lee Goetz, Ryan David Goetz, Alexandra Summar Goetz, Caroline Elizabeth D'Andrea, Katherine Summar D'Andrea, Annalisa Marie D'Andrea, Julia Margaret Summar and John Robert Summar.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.

Active pallbearers will be Tony D'Andrea, Robert W. Summar II, Ryan David Goetz, Wylie Gross, Vernon Duckett, Chancelor Howell Peoples and Ed Gravitt.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class at Ridgedale Baptist Church.

Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

George Taylor Jr.

George Napoleon Taylor Jr. of Lawrenceville, Ga., formerly of Chattanooga, passed Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

George was born July 7, 1945. He was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Dr. George Napoleon and Lily Heath Taylor. He was raised in Chattanooga, graduating from Howard High School in 1963. George, continuing a family history of educational excellence, attended Morehouse College graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in political science.

George immediately entered the professional workforce, becoming the city of Chattanooga's Assistant Personnel Director in August 1968 and promoting to Personnel Director in June 1970. He initiated a career of noteworthy performance for fifteen years as Chattanooga's Personnel Director. Upon completion of his service to the city of Chattanooga, George moved to Georgia living in Dublin with his daughter, Lisa, and later moving to Norcross with his son, Jonathan. George was also very active in the church; as a member of Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, he was a choir member and event volunteer. A citizen leader, he was active in several organizations to include the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), Knights of Columbus, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

A devoted family man, George married Perry Jean Cody in June 1966 and had three children from that union. His favorite pastimes included spending time with his family, reading African-American, philosophy, political science, history, and religious literature, and enjoying a cup of coffee and a newspaper at his favorite restaurants. Possessing a positive outlook on life, George valued the strength of family, the value of education, and the support of community.

George is survived by his children, Dr. Lisa Mitchell, Okinawa, Japan, George Taylor, III, MBA, SPHR, Memphis, Tenn., and Jonathan Taylor, Lawrenceville, Ga. George also leaves behind ten grandchildren, Royall Taylor, Jemeka Taylor, Mahara Taylor, Lindsey Mitchell, Cameron Fitzgerald, Kennedy Taylor, Lauren Mitchell, Aston Taylor, Hunter Taylor, and Taylor Mitchell. He is also loved and survived by two brothers, Mark Taylor and Dr. Paul Taylor, PhD; two sisters, Tara Harrison and Dr. Mona Phillips, PhD; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 1 p.m. at Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 214 East 8th Street, Chattanooga. Father George Schmidt, officiating.

Interment: Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, from 6-8 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home, 3417 Wilcox Blvd. Chattanooga, Tenn.

Emma Weber, 89, of Chattanooga, and formerly of Elrama, Penn., passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Weber moved from Elrama to Chattanooga ten years ago. She was retired from Price Waterhouse Cooper and a member of Elrama United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer. She was a member of the Garden Club in Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eliza McGinn; and husband, Frank R. Weber Jr.

She is survived by her son, Jan Weber, Chattanooga; and sister, Ruth Poling, Jensen Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

TIFTONIA - George William Curtis, 78, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at Memorial hospital.

The son of the late William and Mary Curtis, he attended Wauhatchie United Methodist Church in Tiftonia.

He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Belle Johnson Curtis of Tiftonia; children, Joan (Jimmy) Sewell, Mike (Linda) Curtis and Jeff (Ginger) Curtis, all of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Shane (Kristen) Curtis, Casey Curtis, Whitney and Logan Park, Jason (Emily) Sewell, Ashley (Dustin) Hall, Chad (Elizabeth) Curtis and Blake Curtis; sister, Clara Helen Robison of Chattanooga; brother, John Wilford Curtis of Chattanooga; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

ROSSVILLE - Sidney Don Ellis, 61, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at his residence.

He was a lifelong resident of Rossville and had lived the past five years in Soddy Daisy. He was a United States Air Force veteran serving during Vietnam and was a member of the Del Ray Baptist Church, the Rossville Masonic Lodge 397 F&AM, and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 942.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Catherine Ellis.
