Former Georgia defensive ends coach Jon Fabris has left his job as Louisville's defensive line coach.
Fabris was a member of Mark Richt's inaugural staff in 2001 and remained with the Bulldogs until this past December, when he was fired along with defensive coordinator Willie Martinez and linebackers coach John Jancek. The 52-year-old was hired by new Louisville coach Charlie Strong on Jan. 5.
"He's not coming back," a person close to the situation said Tuesday. "I know he's got a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old and that his mom lives near Athens, and it's my understanding that family was a part of his thinking. I know he wants to be close to his mom."
Louisville may not announce the departure of Fabris until after national signing day next Wednesday. Fabris is expected to be replaced by Clint Hurtt, who has been Miami's defensive line coach the past three seasons under Randy Shannon but no longer is listed on that staff, according to the Hurricanes' Web site.
Fabris is the son of former Rossville High coach Frank Fabris, who died Oct. 31, 2008. The late Fabris coached Rossville to a 64-16-3 record from 1957 to '63 and led the Bulldogs to the '62 state title.
In his nine seasons at Georgia, Fabris headed the development of defensive ends David Pollack, Will Thompson, Quentin Moses, Charles Johnson and Marcus Howard. Pollack was an All-American from 2002 to '04, joining former tailback Herschel Walker as the only Bulldogs to earn that honor three times.
The Georgia stint was a career-long for Fabris, who could not be reached for comment. In February 2005, he left Georgia for a defensive opening at Oklahoma but asked Richt for his old job a couple of days later.
