Edward Baxter Jr.

Edward L. Baxter Jr. died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, in Chattanooga, of heart failure.

He was born Aug. 15, 1961, in Dennison, Ohio. He was an avid fan of Star Trek, astronomy and especially music. Edward always enjoyed getting together with friends and playing guitar. He married Martha Page Baxter on April 22, 2002 and was preceded in death by his parents, Edward L. Baxter Sr. and Lois Ridgeway Baxter; and a brother, Ernest L. Baxter.

He is survived by a son, Adrian Baxter, of Dalton, Ga.; daughter, Jessica Baxter, of Burgettstown, Pa.; two step-children, Nicole and Aaron Ledwell; and three grand-children, all of Chattanooga; brother, Bryan Baxter, of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Lori Baxter-Balmer, of South Bend, Ind.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church.

Billy Hall, 56, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, in a local health facility.

He was preceded in death by parents, Virginia Hall Stinson and Samuel Dutch Hall; stepfather, James Stinson; sisters, Shirley Williams Jones and Chestina Marsh; brothers, Michael Marsh and David Stoudmire.

Ralph Hammonds

Ralph Hammonds, 92, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord (II Corinthians 5:6-8) on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in a local hospital.

He gave his life to the Lord at an early age. He was a WWII Army veteran. He was a faithful member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board for many years. He retired from Lockheed Co.

He was preceded in death by his sons, Lionel, Spencer and Clarence Hammonds; and mother, Cora Hammonds.

Survivors: wife, Dorothy Hammonds; sons, Alphonza (Tanya) Hammonds, Rodney Hammonds, Ronnie Hudgins, Leon Hudgins, Curtis Hammonds, all of Chattanooga, Kenney Hudgins, of Atlanta, Corey Hammonds, of New Orleans, La., Darryl (Kim) Hammonds, Emory Hammonds and Timothy Hammonds, all of Memphis; daughters, Dorothea (Earl) Wheathersby, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Carmen Hudgins and Jackie (Kenneth) Phillips, both of Chattanooga; daughters-in-law, Cheryl Hammonds, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Brenda Hammonds, of Chattanooga; a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral: Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church with Pastor Ternae Jordan officiating.

The body will lie in state today after 12:30 a.m. Taylor Funeral Home.

James Helms

James Franklin Helms, 72, of Ooltewah, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010.

He was the son of the late William and Mamie Helms and was preceded in death by his brother, William Franklin "Bud" Helms; and sister, Sarah Curley.

He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Ooltewah Masonic Lodge 741 F&AM and the Alhambra Shrine. He was a driver for the Alhambra Shrine Transportation which transports children to and from the hospital. He was awarded the 75,000 mile pin for his transportation services to help the children.

James retired as a sales representative for Rudel Machinery located in Charlotte, N.C.

He was the owner and operator of Helms Gunsmith Shop and was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Julie Helms, daughter, Catherine (Don) Dawson, of Ooltewah; four grandchildren, Ashley (Adam) Cooley, Melissa (Nathan) Carter, Lindsay (Alan) Smith, Scott Dawson; great-grandson, Gavin Cooley; three sisters, Mary Alice Wingo, of Lithia Springs, Ga., Hazel Virginia Gaylor, of Fayetteville, Ga., Marion Stanton, McDonough, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony DeYoung officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted at the service.

Interment will follow in Ooltewah Cemetery.

Columbus Keel 84, of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at Kindred Hospital.

Mr. Keel was retired from Harriman Manufacturing.

Linda Landmon

Linda Jean Landmon, 56, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, in a local healthcare facility.

She was a 1972 Riverside graduate. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Leonia Landmon Sr.; one sister; and two brothers.

Herbert Lazenby

Herbert Lazenby, 58, passed away Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at a local hospital.

He was born Oct. 2, 1951 in Chattanooga. He was a graduate of Howard High School class of 1969. He was formerly employed at Erlanger Hospital in the housekeeping department for many years and was also employed at Chattanooga General Services and Thomas Cleaning Services.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father, Warren Lazenby Sr. and mother, Carrie "Grace" Lazenby; brother, Warren Lazenby Jr.; and sister, Harriet Rodgers.

Survivors include his loving sons, Derrick Lazenby and Kevin Lazenby, both of Atlanta; and daughter, Jacquelyn "Fatts" Dixon; brothers, Thomas Lazenby, Hubert Lazenby, Ulysses Lazenby; and sister, Willie Ruth Gamble, all of Chattanooga; a special friend, Gina Glover; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Greater Faith Temple Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Carter officiating.

Maxine "Mackie" Tulloss McCollum, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010.

She was a native of Dayton, Tenn. She attended Olivet Baptist Church. She was a member of Howard Class of 1967.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Josephine Rogers Tulloss; father, Jerome "Jesse" Tulloss; sister, Patricia "Pat" Tulloss and Carolyn Ruth Wilkerson; and grandson, Michael T. McCollum.

Doris June Morgan, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010.

William Phillippi

William James Phillippi, 73, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010, at a local health care facility.

He was born in Rockford, Ill, to the late Oliver Michael and Hilda Paulsen Phillippi.

William and his family resided in Appleton, Wis., for seven years and then moved to New Jersey for the next 25 years.

Mr. Phillippi was an engineer with ARRADCOM with over 10 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Phillippi; and a foster grandchild, Hakeem Stuckey. He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church.

Surviving relatives; wife of 49 years, Mary "Jeri" Phillippi; sons, James Brook, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, David Phillippi, of Rockaway, N.J. Daughters, Mary Blanton, of Alpharetta, Ga. Elizabeth Dennis, of Peachtree City, Ga. Sister, Beverly Zimmer, of Appleton, Wis. Grandchildren, Daniel Dennis, Amanda Dennis, Cynthia Phillippi, Michelle Phillippi; several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her sisters, Velma Mae Skiles, Thelma Ruth Sutherland, Hannah Hensley and Betty Johnson; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Elmer Welch.

Steve Taylor

Steve Taylor, 59, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010.

Steve was a very loving and faithful husband, father and friend. His trustworthiness and sense of humor were some of his greatest attributes. He served as a coach in various sports and also as a mentor to his three sons. Some of his interests were photography, video editing and fishing which mostly centered on his family.

Steve was a member of the First Baptist Church Soddy-Daisy where he was very active. In 1974 he earned his Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson University. For the past 35 years, he worked as a Civil Engineer for TVA. While at TVA he also served as a representative for the United Way.

His father, John Fred Taylor, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dottie Taylor; three sons, Cory Taylor, Andrew Taylor, Sam Taylor; mother, Clara Nell Taylor; brother, John (Louise) Taylor; niece, Stephanie (Robbie) Mitchum and a great-niece and nephew, Taylor and Maddie Mitchum.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at First Baptist Church Soddy-Daisy with Bill Shadwick officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Charles Giddens

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Charles Bryan Giddens, 85, died at home on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 21, 1924, in Scottsboro, Ala., to the late Herbert Bryan Giddens and Pearl Lindsey Giddens. He graduated from Jackson County High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the Railroad Association where he was chief office manager in the Washington, D.C. area.

He is survived by two sisters, Edith Tribble, of Clarksville, Tenn.. and Ann Giddens, of Scottsboro, Ala.; four brothers, Jack B. Giddens, of Scottsboro, Ala., Elmo L. Giddens, Gary F. Giddens and James L. Giddens, all from Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Services will be at Wann Funeral Home today, Jan. 29, 2010, with visitation beginning at 1 to 2 p.m. (EST) and funeral services following immediately at Wann Funeral Home chapel.

Interment will be at Forest Hills Cemetery in St. Elmo.

Ivan Mayo

FORT OGLETHORPE -- Ivan V. Mayo, 86, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, in a local hospital.

He was a longtime resident of North Georgia and a member of Chickamauga Church of Christ. Mr. Mayo was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps, where he was a recipient of several honors including a Purple Heart. He was retired from Sathers Candy Co.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lena Mayo; wife, Georgia Ruth Duke Mayo; son, Aaron "Bo" Parker Jr.; four brothers; one sister; a great-grandson; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Survivors are daughters, Judy (C.L.) Parker Clonts, Soberton, Ga., Mary "Sam" Parker Kinder, Fort Oglethorpe; brothers, Buddy Mayo, Dalton, Ga., Ronnie Mayo, Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

Frances Rand

ATLANTA -Frances Henry Rand died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010.

She was born in Ringgold, Ga., Sept. 23, 1934. She graduated high school in LaFayette, Ga., received her college degree from LaGrange College and her masters degree from Florida State University. She was retired from the Dept. of Family & Children's Services of the state of Georgia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bessie Williams Henry and Samuel Price Henry; and her husband, Daniel Curtiss Rand Jr.

She is survived by a sister, Sammie Leach (Billy S.); brother, Scott Henry (Mary Ann); several cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

She was a member of The Cathredal of St. Phillip, Atlanta.

Memorials can be made to the M.S. Society or the church or charity of your choice.

A celebration of her life will follow at a later date.

Debbie Schlote

ROSSVILLE -- Debbie Douglas Schlote, 51, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010.

She had lived most of her life in the North Georgia area, but had also lived in San Diego, Calif., from 1985 to 1991. She had graduated from Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School in 1976 and was previously employed as an Accounts Analyst in the Insurance Industry for many years. She also enjoyed genealogy and working with computers.

She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Ewen Douglas; and brother, Richard Glenn Douglas.

Survivors include her husband of more than 25 years, Michael Schlote; mother, Doris Douglas, both of Rossville; four sons, Jeremiah Douglas, of Rossville, Patrick Schlote of Kennesaw, Ga., and James Schlote and Alan Schlote, both of Seattle, Wash.; brother, Roy Allan Douglas, of Rossville; three sisters, Gwendolynn Douglas Hester, of East Ridge, Tina Marie Douglas and Theresa Ann Douglas Driver, both of Rossville; two nephews and one niece.

Friends and family are invited to a Memorial service to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, in Calvary Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with a Memorial Celebration to follow at the O'Charley's Restaurant, 2340 Shallowford Village Drive, Chattanooga, 423-892-3343 at 2 p.m.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Joseph Smith Jr

LaFAYETTE -- Joseph H. Smith Jr., 84, passed away Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of the 1943 class of Central High School and was a varsity member of the state basketball champions that year. A U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, Mr. Smith was a retired electrician and a lifelong member of I.B.E.W. Local 175.

He was of the Methodist faith and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Smith; parents, Joseph H. Smith Sr. and Tennie Lee Mathis Smith; son, William Lee "Bill" Smith; and, son-in-law, Johnny L. Stephens.

Survivors include his son, Charles S. Smith ,of LaFayette, Ga.; daughter, Theresa Ann Stephens, Madisonville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Kathryn Stephens Ingram and John David Stephens; great-grandson, Johnny Ingram.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Ricky Studdard officiating.

Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of I.B.E.W. Local 175.
