New green construction training class enrolling

Urban League of Greater Chattanooga is offering a new green construction and weatherization training that leads to the nationally recognized Green Advantage Certification.

At the completion of the 10-week program, participants will have three certifications: Lane Control & Flagging, OSHA 10 and Green Advantage.

Limited space is available in the class. Deadline to enroll is Feb. 12. Participants must be bondable and preference will go to individuals who are 18 or older and experiencing barriers to employment. Participants must have a high school diploma or GED.

Autism seminar offered Friday

Chattanooga Autism Center is sponsoring "Autism: Connecting the Pieces Through the Lifespan" on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Read House.

Registration fees, which include lunch and snack, are $30 nonprofessional individuals, $50 nonprofessional families, $100 for professionals seeking Continuing Education Unit credits. Fee waivers are available for families facing financial hardships. For more information obtaining a waiver call the center.

Chili cook-off in East Brainerd

Members of Reserves Unit 212, the District Attorney's office and Chattanooga Police Department will face off in a chili competition today to raise money to send care packages to troops in Afghanistan. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Heritage House of Heritage Park, 1428 Jenkins Road.

The cook-off is free, but donations will be accepted.

Haircuts for Haiti today in Dayton

Market Street Hair is sponsoring a fundraiser today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to raise funds for a donation to CARE in support of Haitian earthquake relief. Haircuts for Haiti will be held at Market Street Hair, 1334 Market St. in Dayton, Tenn.

Hairstylists will offer haircuts at a special price of $25 for females, $15 for males, $12 for children 12 and younger.

Fall prevention class Thursday

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries is hosting a free Lunch and Learn on fall prevention on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Senior Neighbors Soddy-Daisy Center, 190 Depot St.

Physical therapist Eunice Campbell will present tips on how to maintain independence by preventing falls.

Veterinarian to present concert

Dr. Hugh McCampbell, a large-animal veterinarian in Sweetwater, Tenn., is presenting his third benefit concert on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. It will be in the Sweetwater Methodist Church's Family Life Center in downtown Sweetwater.

Dr. McCampbell will play piano and banjo, and tell stories of veterinary practice and of growing up on the family dairy farm in rural Knox County.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, local Boy Scout troops, and the Sweetwater Valley Citizens for the Arts.

Film screening, lunch at JCC

The Jewish Cultural Center is offering an episodic screening of "Daniel Deronda," a PBS film based on George Elliot's last novel. The love story set in Victorian high society caused a stir in 1876 for its exposure of human and social issues, according to a news release from the JCC.

The episodes begin Monday and will continue Feb. 8 and 15 at 11 a.m. at the JCC, 5461 North Terrace. A $7 fee includes movie, light Victorian lunch and a discussion led by Trudy Trivers.

Orchid seminar set for Tuesday

Learn how to grow orchids in your home at Orchids 101, a free seminar and potting demonstration on Tuesday at 7 p.m., at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St.

Geraldine Powell, winner of numerous American Orchid Society awards, will discuss the history of the plants, what makes orchids different from other flowers, and how best to grow them.

Bright School benefit today

Students from Bright School will be selling wooden bells they decorated today from noon to 4 p.m. at the Comcast Stage in Hamilton Place.

The bells are $5 and all proceeds will be donated to the Children's Nutrition Program of Haiti.

Engineers Club meets Monday

Chattanooga Engineers Club will meet Monday at noon at the Doubletree Hotel, 407 Chestnut St.

"Energy Policy and the Smart Grid" will be presented by Rob Manning, executive vice president, Power Systems Operations, TVA. He will discuss how national energy policy is affecting TVA's power system and anticipated future effects.

Visitors are welcome to the meetings.

One-man show Feb. 11 at Lee

Atlanta actor Tom Key will appear in a one-man show, "C.S. Lewis on Stage," on Thursday, Feb. 11, as part of Lee University's Presidential Concert Series. The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Dixon Center.

"C.S. Lewis on Stage" is based on Lewis' autobiography, "Surprised by Joy." Mr. Key, as Lewis, portrays characters from "The Great Divorce," "The Screwtape Letters," "The Dark Tower and Other Stories," and quotes his poetry.

Tickets for "C.S. Lewis on Stage" will be available at the Lee University Box Office in the Dixon Center, or by phone at 614-8343, one week prior to the performance between 3 and 6 p.m.

College expands adult services

Georgia Northwestern Technical College has been awarded a $165,000 grant through the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission. The grant will allow an expansion of Adult Education opportunities for eligible workers who have been displaced from their jobs.

Program services will include 20 hours a week of instruction for refreshing basic academic skills, preparing for the GED test, learning English language skills, and upgrading Georgia Work Ready Certificate skill levels to meet requirements for new employment.

Eligible participants will receive their books at no cost, and a GED testing scholarship when they post passing scores on the official GED practice test before June 30.

Classes will be taught in Calhoun, LaFayette, Ringgold, Rockmart, Rock Spring, Rome, Rossville, Summerville and Trenton, Ga.

Tutoring offered in Sweetwater

A new educational support program will begin Monday at the Marcella Center for the Arts and Education Community Center in Sweetwater, Tenn.

The program will offer reading and math tutoring for grades 4-12, adult computer classes and GED classes.
