Helen Taylor

Helen Joan Murphy Taylor, died on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, 13 days following her 85th birthday, after an extended illness, surrounded by her family. Affectionately known by those close to her as Murph, Maw, and Momma, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Murphy and was born in Milwaukee, Wis., on January 16, 1925.

Going against the norm of the era, Helen and her two sisters, Ruth and Jane, were raised to think for themselves and be independent. With that in mind, at the age of seventeen and her high school diploma in hand, Helen left the calm of Wisconsin and followed her plan to be a nurse and serve in World War II. She moved to Wilmington, Del., and enrolled in nursing school immediately. She never served in the war as she met and married Charles Taylor, her husband of 59 years. Charles preceded Helen in death on Feb. 24, 2007.

Living in Wilmington with her husband teaching at the University of Delaware, Helen settled in to being a homemaker. She had two children, Charlie and Pam, who kept her busy each day. She shared stories of the antics of Charlie and contentment of Pam which were always entertaining to anyone who heard them. She also told of frequent student visitors to their apartment when grades earned weren't what the students expected.

The family later moved to Augusta, Ga., because Charles accepted a position to build the first nuclear reactor at the Savannah River Plant in Aiken. Shortly after moving, Helen started playing golf. Whether influenced by the annual Masters Tournament or gentle pressure from her new friends, she played frequently and got better each year. She loved the first week of April and spending the entire week walking the Augusta National course as she watched the legends of golf play. Memories of taking sandwiches, drinks and blankets to the area surrounding the 15th or 18th greens were some of her happiest when thinking about the Masters of long ago. It was always a week of parties, friends, and endless golf – all of which she loved dearly.

In 1963, the family made one final move to Signal Mountain, after Charles accepted a position with DuPont. Because Charlie and Pam were older, Helen briefly went to work for a doctor, but left because it interfered with her golf days playing in the Chattanooga Women's Golf Association and the Signal Mountain Women's Golf Association. How she loved that game! Over the years, as a member of Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club, Helen got quite good at it, winning several local tournaments and placing in numerous state tournaments. She loved the travel with her golfing buddies and the fun they had with "just the girls".

Even though she never pursued nursing as a career, the desire to help others brought Helen to Erlanger Hospital as a volunteer. Serving over 40 years, she assisted in several areas of the hospital including the infant nursery, ICU, and until September, in the office of Dr. Drago Tolosa. Helen took great pride in her volunteerism and was recognized by others when selected to serve as the Secretary and later, President of the Woman's Auxiliary.

Helen will be remembered as the strongest woman we have known. She overcame unbelievable odds when faced with medical issues and was truly a miracle. We know she was with us only because of God's plan for her. Through it all, when asked how she was feeling, the only reply our Mother knew was "Oh, I am fine" and fine she was until she left us. Even though we are saddened by her death, we celebrate her life because we are a part of her. Our Mother's love, influence, wisdom, and encouragement made us who we are today.

In addition to her children, Charlie Taylor (Kathy) and Pam Dantzler (Steve), both of Signal Mountain, Helen is survived by her sisters, Ruth, of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Jane, of Langley, Mich.; her brother in law, Antonio D'Ambrosio, of New York City; her grandchildren, Tricia, Meg, Andy, and Taylor, as well as her great-grandchildren, Brayden, Sam, Emerson, Lily, Hutch, Bo and Layne.

We would like to sincerely thank all of the doctors responsible for our Mother's care through the years, the Chattanooga Kidney Center for their support, Alexian Village for their care and support, and Hospice of Chattanooga for their support and guidance.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you donate to any of the organizations listed or a charity of your choice in her name.

There will be no visitation.
