"Dragon" could open Friday after rock slide

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A section of U.S. 129 that was closed because of a rock slide in March is reopening.

The road that forms the southeastern border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a favorite of many motorcycle riders because of numerous curves. It's nicknamed "The Dragon."

A large rock slide closed part of it March 14.

TDOT officials said the contractor hopes to have the final work done, allowing the road to be opened again on Friday. If that happens, Pacific Blasting & Demolition would get a $136,500 bonus because the project would come in three weeks ahead of schedule.

The last of the scaling of loose rock was done over the July 4 weekend and final paving, striping and guardrail work was being done Thursday.
