Trustee’s office under federal scrutiny

by Monica Mercer

Hamilton County Trustee Carl Levi admitted Friday that federal investigators have for months been “unhappy” with the way the county keeps records of property tax payments.

He said federal officials earlier this week subpoenaed him to appear before a federal grand jury Monday and to bring “all documents with him.”

But a call Mr. Levi received late this afternoon, he said, indicated he no longer must appear.

Mr. Levi said that he has “no idea” what the investigation is about and that he didn’t know why the subpoena all of a sudden was canceled.

He said the county has been taking in property taxes for years the same way it always has and that he thinks federal officials “just didn’t like the way we do things.”
