Rossville Councilman Nathan Bain passed away Wednesday evening after battling cancer.
Mr. Bain, who was in the middle of his third term, died just before 8 p.m. surrounded by family members, according to Rossville Mayor Johnny Baker.
"He's leaving a big hole in our city," Mr. Baker said. "He was one of our most involved councilmen ever. He brought a wealth of information."
The mayor said Mr. Bain, 73, will be remembered for his efforts to build and maintain the Veterans Memorial in Rossville as well as his push for residential beautification.
Mr. Bain, who also was a member of the Walker County Planning Commission, had been a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard for 43 years and served in Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia during Operation Desert Storm.
Councilman Teddy Harris said he'll remember Mr. Bain as a kind teacher who took younger council members under his wing.
"He was always willing to discuss anything with me when I was first elected," Mr. Harris said. "He was really a mentor to me."
Mr. Baker said Mr. Bain was a tireless researcher who was well informed on city issues.
"We counted on Nathan for a lot of advice," he said.
The funeral service will be at Lane Funeral South Crest Chapel in Rossville at 1 p.m. Monday, followed by a full military burial at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
