Kiwanis annual barbecue ends today

The 64th annual Brainerd Kiwanis Club barbecue wraps up today. Event hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Customers may drive through the convenient tent set up behind the former 21st Century Academy, one block off Brainerd Road on Cherryton Drive.

For $7, customers have their choice of either a Sticky Fingers barbecue beef or pork plate with beans and slaw or 10-ounce package of meat.

All proceeds benefit the nearly two dozen youth agencies supported by the Kiwanians.



Laura Mercier event registering

Associates of Laura Mercier cosmetics at Belk Hamilton Place are hosting their annual two-day event Aug. 13-14 to showcase new products in makeup and skin care.

Shoppers may make an appointment for a makeover for $35, which is redeemable in products the day of the event.

Reservations are required due to limited seating.

Night Out events are Tuesday

The Red Bank Neighborhood Pride Association is hosting National Night Out at Red Bank City Park, across from Bi-Lo on Dayton Boulevard, Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

National Night Out was founded by the National Association of Town Watch to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs and strengthen police-community partnerships.

Entertainment will be provided by Steve Daugherty. Children’s activities will include face painting, fingerprinting by the Police Department and free eye screenings by the Red Bank Lions Club. Pet photography will be offered by Pick of the Litter Grooming.

Also, a National Night Out event is being hosted by the Churchville Neighborhood Association at North Orchard Knob Avenue and Jackson Street from 5 to 8 p.m.

Historical society meets Sunday

The James County Historical Society will meet Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Ooltewah United Methodist Church.

The program will be on the early days of James County High School and Ooltewah High School. Those planning to attend are asked to bring pictures, annuals and other materials from those days. The meeting is open to the public.

Wartrace yard sale seeks vendors

The Middle Tennessee town of Wartrace, Tenn., is inviting out-of-town vendors to participate in its 15th annual town-wide yard sale to be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28. Sale hours are 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Sponsored by the Wartrace Chamber of Commerce, the event has taken on a festival-like atmosphere over the years and attracts thousands of visitors.

Shoppers can choose from antiques, appliances, used cars, baked goods, clothing, crafts, electronics, toys and more. There will be food vendors and live music in the downtown square.

Church fish fry scheduled today

Greater New Hope Church of God in Christ is sponsoring a fish fry today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., or until supplies run out. The sale will be held at the church, 4707 12th Ave., corner of 12th Avenue and East 47th Street.

Stringer’s Ridge hike Thursday

Join Outdoor Chattanooga on Thursday for a free, guided hike on Stringer’s Ridge at 6 p.m. Meet at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. in Coolidge Park, to car caravan to the trailhead.

Expect an hour and a half of hiking at a leisurely pace on a single-track trail. Sturdy shoes are a must. The hike is suitable for adults and children ages 8 and older accompanied by an adult.

Bike2Work breakfast is Friday

The monthly Bike2Work breakfast will be held Friday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the south end of the Walnut Street Bridge.

Join area bike commuters for coffee and conversation about pedaling to work. Representatives from DOGood Citizens for a Dog Friendly Chattanooga will attend to discuss the Walnut Street Bridge’s opening to dog walkers.

Greenway trail race Aug. 7

The Greenway 5-Mile Trail race will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, to raise money for the Wilderness Trail Association.

The running event takes place on the scenic farmland and woods of Chattanooga’s Greenway Farm.

Biking calendar photos needed

Photos and inspiring words about bicycling, walking and healthy communities are needed to promote a new 16-month calendar project for the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals.

The calendar will be distributed to bicycling and pedestrian professionals worldwide. It will debut at the Pro Walk/Pro Bike and American Trails Symposium in Chattanooga.

Gospel show seeks performers

The Churchville Neighborhood Association is sponsoring its third Gospel Extravaganza on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 2 to 8 p.m.

Performers and vendors are being sought for the event.

School supply drive at mall

Strasburg Children is sponsoring a three-day school supplies drive beginning Friday at the Hamilton Place store.

Requested items include crayons, glue, ruled paper, pencil pouches, scissors, erasers and pencils.

Betty Pittard, store manager, said the supplies will be donated to the Community Kitchen for distribution.

Walnut Street Bridge to reopen

The Walnut Street Bridge will reopen on Aug. 7 at 2 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and special grand opening for dog walkers. The bridge has been closed for repairs.

DOGood Citizens for a Dog Friendly Chattanooga will host a special dog walk across the bridge and sponsor a booth with dog-related information, special treats and information about DOGood’s efforts.

From 4 to 6 p.m., “Yappy Hour” will take place at Greenlife Grocery following the official opening.
