Whitfield woman charged in domestic slaying

A Whitfield County woman has been charged with shooting her husband to death this morning.

According to a news release, Rita Spurgeon called 911 at 1:37 a.m. to say that someone had come into her home on Maple Grove Road and shot her husband in their bed, then run away.

Audie Eugene Spurgeon, 55, was shot at least once in the head and was dead at the scene, according to Sheriff Scott Chitwood.

But he said investigators found evidence contradicting Mrs. Spurgeon's story. They found a .22 caliber semiautomatic pistol in woods next to the house. After questioning her, they charged Mrs. Spurgeon, 39, with murder, Sheriff Chitwood's release said.

The body has been taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for autopsy. Mrs. Spurgeon is being held without bond in the Whitfield County Jail.
