LaFayette: 20-year-old drowns

A 20-year-old man drowned Tuesday evening in the calm waters of a LaFayette pond, authorities report.

Joseph Alexander Strefling apparently jumped from a culvert at Twin City Pond but never resurfaced, said LaFayette Public Safety Director Tommy Freeman.

Mr. Strefling was swimming with two friends, Mr. Freeman said, and a female onshore witnessed the incident and reported that Mr. Strefling never came back. Emergency workers were called to the scene about 9:45 p.m.

Mr. Freeman said the waters were calm and the culvert had no suction. When Mr. Strefling was recovered, his lungs were full of water, Mr. Freeman said.

Authorities have ruled the drowning accidental following an examination at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Atlanta Crime Lab.
