Mississippi edges Lookouts in 11 innings, 5-4

PEARL, Miss. -- Pinch hitter Alejandro Machado singled in Concepcion Rodriguez in the 11th inning to give the Mississippi Braves a 5-4 Southern League baseball win over the visiting Chattanooga Lookouts on Thursday.

The Braves' Randy Gress singled between the two other one-out hits off David Pfeiffer, who had pitched a 1-2-3 10th.

Eric Duncan hit an RBI triple in the first inning and Mauro Gomez had RBI singles in the first and third for Mississippi, and Donell Linares scored in each of those innings.

Ramon Nivar was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Lookouts, and Eduardo Perez had a tying two-run single in the eighth. Dee Gordon was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and his 24th stolen base of the season.

Game two of a five-game series is tonight at 8:05 EDT. Jesus Castillo (3-6, 2.67 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Lookouts, with Erik Cormier (4-4, 4.23) scheduled for the Braves.

Alberto Bastardo, one of the Lookouts' starting pitchers, was promoted before the game to Albuquerque and pitcher Brent Leach was sent to Chattanooga from Triple-A. Bastardo went 5-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 11 Double-A starts, while Leach was 3-2 with a 6.62 ERA in 21 games (three starts) with Albuquerque.
