Civil War driving tour wins honor

DALTON, Ga. -- A Civil War driving tour of Dalton and Whitfield County has been honored with the National Association of Counties Achievement Award.

The program consists of a booklet, a map and a CD that provides narration as motorists drive to Civil War sites. Tour materials are sold by several merchants, at the Dalton Freight Depot Visitor Center and the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center.

In a news release, Kay Phillips with the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau said a summary of the program will be included in the National Association of Counties' Model Programs database, and highlights will be presented in an upcoming issue of County News' Focus on Achievement.

"It feels good to be a winner," County Administrator Bob McLeod said in the release.

According to Ms. Philips, the project involved many partners. Whitfield County put up seed money and former Dalton State College President Jim Burran researched and assembled information.

County employees produced the driving map and road signs, and tourism groups helped assembly and publish the booklets, Ms. Philips said.
