Braly: 'Say Yes to Beets'

I’ve never been a huge fan of pickled beets. Love roasted beets, though. My dad could have pickled beets at every meal. And now I’m thinking it’s an older-generation favorite because many of the residents at Hickory Valley Retirement Center order them for a dinner side dish when they’re on the menu.

But if you do like them, Aunt Nellie’s, maker of pickled beets, wants you to “Say Yes to Beets” by sending in your favorite recipe, whether it’s an appetizer, main dish, soup, salad, side dish or even dessert.

Recipe categories include:

* Beverages/Smoothies: Includes cocktails, juice blends and smoothies.

* Everyday Quick: Includes easy, everyday dishes for any occasion.

* Special: Includes special occasion and holiday favorites.

Entries will be judged on the basis of taste, creativity and ease of preparation. Recipes can be newly created or an existing favorite that features changes the judges deem significant. Your recipe could be the $2,500 grand prize winner, or one of three $1,000 first-prize or three $500 second-prize winners.

Submit your recipes to auntnellies@mpfood.com before 11:59 p.m. August 13. You’ll find more information at www.auntnellies.com.

I've never been able to come to eating beets. But, I guess I can always try!
