4-year-old injured in tumble at Rock City

by Monica Mercer

A little boy who fell about 20 feet Tuesday while visiting the Rock City tourist attraction was not on a designated trail, company officials said.

"The father removed (the boy) from a crevice not on a trail where visitors are allowed to walk," Rock City spokeswoman Meagan Jolley said.

Despite the fall, the boy, whose name was not released, remained "conscious and alert" until an ambulance arrived about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Lookout Mountain, Ga., investigator Eric Robertson said. The boy was taken to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital, Mr. Robertson said.

Ms. Jolley said the hospital had released the boy to his parents, who are from out of town, by late afternoon with no broken bones or other significant injuries.

Rock City officials said they still were unsure Tuesday afternoon of the exact location where the little boy took the fall, saying they were concerned only about getting him to the hospital.

Ms. Jolley said the area where medics picked up the boy likely was not the place where he actually fell, since his father already had rescued him.

She added that Rock City does not keep a record of people who fall in the park. Such falls are "extremely rare," she said, but the possibility still exists for injuries.

"There are places, lots of crevices along the trails, where there's the potential for anyone to fall," Ms. Jolley said.
