Tyner Academy Hall of Fame seeks alumni nominations

The Tyner Academy Hall of Fame committee is accepting nominations for its second Hall of Fame induction, scheduled for April 29.

Any graduate of either Tyner High School or Tyner Academy who has made significant career achievements or contributed to their community is eligible.

Anyone wishing to nominate a Tyner graduate will find the nomination form online at www.tyneracademy.org or may pick up one in the main office of Tyner Academy.

Completed nominations must be submitted by April 9. A committee will review all nominations and choose honorees. Those selected will be notified and honored at an induction ceremony and reception on April 29 at Tyner Academy.

Memorial health coach in Ringgold

Memorial's Mobile Health Coach will visit North Georgia Healthcare, 6120 Alabama Highway in Ringgold, Ga., on March 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Women age 40 and over, who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months, are eligible with or without insurance. Ladies will need to know their doctor's name, and those with insurance will need to bring their insurance cards and a photo ID.

Newcomers meet Wednesday

Chattanooga Newcomers Club will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday. Luncheon reservations must be made by Sunday.

The club welcomes women new to the city, inviting them to participate in special-interest activities such as monthly coffees, a book club, bridge, and Ladies Day Out.

Dr. Seuss event today at CSCC

The seventh annual "Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss" celebration is today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cleveland State Community College's library.

On hand for photo-opportunities will be four of Dr. Seuss's most well-known characters: the Cat in the Hat, Thing One and Thing Two and the Grinch.

"Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss" is free to children of all ages, however all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Each child will receive a goody bag and may participate in literacy activities, assisted by students in Cleveland State's language and literacy development class. The 50th child to arrive will receive a special gift commemorating the 50th year of Dr. Seuss's book, "Happy Birthday to You."

Credit Union helps children

Trust Federal Credit Union has launched a Facebook promotion called Project 2010 with a goal of raising money for the Children's Home/Chambliss Shelter.

When Trust FCU gets 2,010 fans to their page on Facebook, the company will donate $2,010 to the local charity.

Trail of Tears meeting March 13

The Georgia chapter of the Trail of Tears Association will meet at the Indian Spring Hotel/Museum in Flovilla, Ga., on Saturday, March 13, at 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Barbara Kawulich, associate professor at the University of West Georgia, will give a presentation on the Muscogee (Creek) people, focusing on cultural issues related to the role of the women of that nation.

Music teachers meet Thursday

The Chattanooga Music Teachers Association will meet Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Crutcher Pianos, 6223 Lee Highway. The public is invited to attend at no charge.

The program, Success with Transfer Students, will feature a discussion with teachers Charlynne Fry, Martha King, Katheron Latham and Megan Johnson. Topics will include transition of study, materials, relationships, policies, methods, personalities, and other encounters between students and teachers.

Poetry reading set at library

Nine area poets, members of the Chattanooga Writers Guild, will read their poetry on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Bicentennial Library, 1001 Broad St.

Participating poets will be K.B. Ballentine, Helga Kidder, Finn Bille, Kitty Forbes, Jane Starnes, Roger Meyer, Nancy Diwan, Karen Phillips and Thomas White.

The reading is free and open to the public.

Autism Center starts play group

The Parents Advisory Group of Chattanooga Autism Center is starting its first play group open to ages preschool through first grade.

The group will meet Tuesday at 10 a.m. at LifeLine, 1609 McCallie Ave. While children play, parents will discuss the best times for future meetings, ideas for activities and locations for outings.

Young Professionals meeting Friday

The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga's Young Professionals Association is hosting a series of quarterly Dinner & Dialogue conversations.

The first will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at The Kingdon Center, 730 M.L. King Blvd. Dinner will be catered by Carrabba's Italian Grill.

Tickets are $15 in advance, reservations are required.

Bicycling seminar set for adults

Adults ages 55 and older are invited to attend a workshop on staying active by bicycling today from 10 a.m. to noon at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St.

The free workshop will focus on safe outdoor active living for older adults. An introduction to bicycling will be included along with practice using the Outdoor Chattanooga bicycle fleet.

Boat-building event Thursday

Outdoor Chattanooga is hosting a free winter workshop at which kayak builder Rob Paden will share the basics of boat building from wood. He will discuss types and styles of boats and kits that can get people started.

The workshop will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St.

Kayak trip March 13

Rock/Creek and Outdoor Chattanooga are partnering for a series of kayak adventures, beginning with a day trip on Nickajack Lake Saturday, March 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The trip is appropriate for adults and children ages 14 and older accompanied by an adult. Participants will paddle around Bennett Lake, Little Chestnut Mountain and the relic Hales Bar Dam. Rock/Creek will host brief winter paddling seminar and gear demonstration.

Cost is $65 per person, which includes all gear, guides, lunch, snacks, beverages and transportation.

Forum on crime Thursday

The Sector III Chattanooga Police Interactive Committee meeting will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the District Connection Constituent Resource Center. The center is located at 5896 Brainerd Road in Brainerd Village Shopping Center, next to Qdoba.

This is the first of a community forum series on crime the District Connection will host. The meeting is free and open to all.

Senior Neighbors event Thursday

Jane Ketchum, an Erlanger R.N., will present a workshop on how to cope with the difficult behaviors that often accompany Alzheimer's and other types of dementias on Thursday.

The free workshop will be held at 10 a.m. in the Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Center, 190 Depot Street in Soddy-Daisy.

Hepatitis forum set for Tuesday

The Chattanooga Hepatitis C Group will host an educational forum on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Parkridge Diagnostic Building, first floor.

The forum is free and open to the public in order to teach everyone more about Hepatitis C, how it is spread and what can be done to get rid of the virus.

Artists visiting 55-Plus Club

Members of the Art Department of Southern Adventist University will present the program at the 55-Plus Club on March 14.

"The Two Image Makers," a gospel art presentation illustrating the battle between Christ and Satan, will be presented by Brian Dunne, Clint Ratliff and Loren Howard

The program will be held at 12:50 p.m. following lunch in the fellowship hall of Collegedale Seventh-day Adventist Church. The vegetarian potluck begins at noon.
