Chattanooga: Council approves $11.7 million budget for water quality

The City Council voted 6-3 tonight to approve an $11.7 million budget for the city’s water quality program.

The budget for the program, also known as stormwater fees, was proposed by Mayor Ron Littlefield’s city administration almost three weeks ago.

Fees for nonresidential users such as businesses, industries and churches, could drop from $9.60 to $6.15 a month per equivalent residential unit, which are based on the size of the facility when compared to residential houses, officials said.

The council will vote on a second reading of the ordinance in five weeks, giving the city enough time to fulfill a law that says changes to the water quality ordinance must be advertised at least 30 days before the vote.

Councilwomen Pam Ladd and Deborah Scott and Councilman Manny Rico voted against the ordinance.
