The lure of illegal cockfighting

Most people surely will have difficulty understanding the lure of cockfighting. But from time to time, there are reports of numerous arrests of people who are charged with engaging in that brutal endeavor.

There has been a recent example, with the reported arrest of more than 60 people near Chatsworth, in Murray County, Ga.

Cockfighting is reported to be common in some rural areas. It involves breeding roosters that have an inclination to challenge and combat each other. Then their legs are fitted with metal spurs, so the fowls will lacerate each other as they kick, possibly till one rooster kills the other.

It's illegal. But in addition to the excitement of animal combat, there is the lure of gambling. Many dollars may pass from hand to hand, depending upon which roosters prevail in the contests.

In the case that recently surfaced in Georgia, it was reported that state and local police authorities had discovered that such events had been going on for more than a year. It is said that cockfighting has been a widespread problem.

We certainly should not approve cruelty to animals, nor illegal gambling on cockfights.
