Students from Chattanooga State Community College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are uniting to collect medical supplies to assist in Haitian earthquake relief. The drive begins today and will conclude March 29.
Businesses assisting the students are Goodwill Industries, Fillauer Inc., Wal-Mart, Benton Oil Service and 3-H Group Hotels.
Called Embrace Haiti, the project focuses primarily on obtaining medical equipment, specifically devices that improve mobility and independence for individuals.
Recommended donations include walkers, cervical collars, wheelchairs, slings, canes, crutches, splints, braces, therapeutic shoes, and foot boots. Tents, tarps, bandages, sanitizing sprays and creams, cleaning solutions, laundry detergent, towels, blankets, and tube socks are other items that students will be collecting.
As students gather supplies and equipment, they will pack and load them into an 18-wheel transportation trailer that Chattanooga State uses to train students enrolled in the college's commercial truck driving program.
On March 29, Chattanooga State students will drive the donations to Bluffton, Ind. The medical supplies will be sent to a Haiti-based rehabilitation clinic founded by Dr. June Hanks, a local physical therapist and an associate professor at UTC.
The Chattanooga State truck will be accepting donations from the community at the following locations:
* Sunday-Monday, Highway 153 Wal-Mart
* Monday-Tuesday, UTC
* Wednesday-Friday, Chattanooga State
* Saturday-Sunday, Gunbarrel Road Wal-Mart
* March 29: Chattanooga State
