NASHVILLE - Another national conservative group, the Eagle Forum PAC, is endorsing Republican Robin Smith of Hixson in the 3rd Congressional District's GOP primary.

"Robin is exactly the kind of leader we need in Washington," said Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly in a news release today. "She is a fierce defender of life with a proven record as an effective socially and fiscally conservative leader."

Mrs. Schlafly praised Mrs. Smith's leadership in 2008 as the state Republican Party chair as well as her "unique background and experiences as a mother, a critical care nurse, a small business owner and a state party leader."

Other recent endorsements for Mrs. Smith include the Club for Growth, Concerned Women for America and the Susan B. Anthony List.

Other GOP candidates in the 3rd District contest include Chattanooga attorney Chuck Fleischmann, Bradley County Sheriff Tim Gobble, attorney Van Irion, businessman Tommy Crangle and businessman Art Rhodes. Democrat Brenda Short also is running.

The 3rd District seat had been held for nearly 16 years by U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., who is running for governor.
