Hunter speaks on Tennessee Wild Monday at GreenSpaces

Jeff Hunter, coordinator of the Tennessee Wild project for the Southern Appalachian Forest Coalition, will speak Monday at 7 p.m. at GreenSpaces, 63 E. Main St.

Mr. Hunter, a naturalist, fisherman and backpacker, will focus on Tennessee Wild's effort to protect more than 20,000 acres of the Cherokee National Forest as wilderness.

Square dance classes begin

Patriotic Squares Dance Club is starting new classes on Friday nights beginning April 9, continuing through April 23.

The dancers will meet at 7 p.m. at Ooltewah United Methodist Church, 6131 Relocation Way, which is behind the Ooltewah Bi-Lo.

Sale Creek egg hunt is April 3

Sale Creek Lions Club will hold its annual Easter egg hunt for children ages 12 and younger on Saturday, April 3. The egg hunt will begin at 1 p.m. in the field beside Langston's shoe store on Highway 27. Children should bring their own baskets to the free hunt, and must be accompanied by an adult.

Sleep seminars register for April

Dr. Anuj Chandra at the Advanced Center for Sleep Disorders is offering an educational seminar on Thursday, April 8, which will be repeated on April 15.

The seminar will provide information on how to get a good night's sleep and how to recognize and respond to sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy.

The seminar is free, but enrollment is limited to no more than 10 participants. Reservations are required. Call the Advanced Center for Sleep Disorders at 648-8008.

East Ridge group meets Monday

The East Ridge Education Committee is hosting a community meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. at McBrien Elementary School.

Berry College festival is today

Berry College in Rome, Ga., is hosting its annual spring arts and crafts festival today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Moon Building.

The free event, sponsored by the Berry College Art Society, will feature handcrafted items such as paintings, pottery, jewelry, origami, tie-dye, knitting and costume accessories. Berry students, faculty and alumni have created all the items for sale at the festival.

Alexian egg hunt scheduled today

Alexian Brothers Senior Ministries is hosting a community Easter egg hunt today at 1 p.m. at Alexian Grove, 100 Asbury Oak Lane in Lookout Valley.

Children ages 1 to 12 are invited to hunt for Easter eggs, visit with the Easter bunny, participate in the jelly bean counting contest, enjoy refreshments and search for prize eggs. Children should bring their own basket.

Shoe drive offered in Ooltewah

St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Ooltewah is sponsoring Walk in Love Ministry. This shoe drive is collecting new or gently used walking shoes in sizes 8-14; men's shoes are especially needed.

Other donations of foot care products or socks are welcomed. Checks will also be accepted, and should be made payable to the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

A shoe collection barrel is placed in front of the main entrance of the church, which is located at 7555 Ooltewah-Georgetown Road.

All donations will be delivered to Brother Ron Fender, a member of the Brotherhood of St. Gregory. Mr. Fender provides therapeutic care for the feet of the homeless served at the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

Join Chattanooga's bicycle commuters for a free Bike2Work breakfast on Friday from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. in Coolidge Park.

Kayak trip set for April 3

A fully guided kayak excursion in the quiet inlets and sloughs of Sale Creek is registering for Saturday, April 3, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Outdoor Chattanooga and Rock/Creek will provide kayaks and gear, guides, transportation, snacks and lunch. Cost is $65 per person and preregistration is required.

Climbing gear demo Tuesday

Rock/Creek will host a demo night Tuesday to show off the latest climbing gear for 2010. The climbing demonstration will be held at Urban Rocks Gym, 1007 Appling St., from 5 to 9 p.m.

The first 50 climbers will get in free, then normal gym rates will apply.

Wildflower hikes set in Sequatchie

Join the Sequatchie Valley Institute staff and friends for spring wildflower hikes on Saturdays, April 3 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST. Naturalist John Johnson will lead the walks.

Hikes will begin at 11 a.m. CST. There will be a choice of a long, strenuous hike or a shorter, relaxed walk.

Participants may arrive early to visit the gardens, handmade homes, and crafts gallery. Guests may also bring picnic lunches.

A sliding-scale donation of $5-20 will be applied.

Mammograms offered Monday

Memorial Hospital's Mobile Health Coach will offer mammogram screenings Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Family Medicine, 5958 Snow Hill Road in Ooltewah.

Women ages 40 and over who have not had a mammogram in the last 12 months are eligible with or without insurance. Ladies will need to know their doctor's name, and those with insurance will need to bring their insurance cards and a photo ID.

Easter egg hunt set in Mentone

The merchants at Log Cabin Craft Village in Mentone, Ala., are hosting an Easter egg hunt at the village on Saturday, April 3.

The hunt, which is for toddlers to 10-year-olds, will begin at 1 p.m.

Although the event is free, registration is required by 12:45 p.m. on the day of the event.

There will be prize eggs mixed among the candy eggs.

Children should bring their own baskets.

Hospice offers memorial service

Hospice of Chattanooga is hosting a memorial service Sunday afternoon to remember the lives of patients who died between Dec. 1, 2009, and Feb. 28.

The service will begin at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church, 401 Gateway Ave.

The Rev. L. Clark Taylor Jr. will deliver the address.

The program will include a lighting of candles, music, and reading of each deceased patient's name.

A reception for families to visit with Hospice staff will be held following the service.

Depression recovery taught

A Depression Recovery Program will be offered to the community beginning Monday at 7 p.m. The program will be held at Chattanooga First Seventh-Day Adventist Church's activity center, 7450 Standifer Gap Road.

The eight-week plan is designed to help participants know whether depression or another cause is draining their energy. It covers the best way to achieve restorative rest and rejuvenation and how to enhance circulation and activity of the brain's control center of emotions.

The first meeting is free. If guests decide to participate in subsequent sessions, the cost of the program is $30.
