What makes us special?
The Carmike Majestic 12 is the first freestanding green theater in the United States.
Let’s go to the movies.
In November 2009, Chattanooga opened the nation’s first freestanding green theater, the Carmike Majestic.
According to Kim White, president of River City Co., energy-efficient LED lights in the lobby are on sensors to keep them dim and use less energy during daylight hours. A 10,000-gallon holding tank collects rainwater from the roof and uses it to flush the toilets in the building.
Besides bringing more environmental awareness to the Scenic City, the Majestic also has 12 theaters with screens at least 40 feet wide, stadium seating and a VIP screening room, the Ovation Club.
A 56-seat theater, the Ovation Club boasts reclining leather seats, a special menu with wait service and is open only to those ages 21 and up.
But for those of age, employee Nick Owens clears up a mystery surrounding rumors of exclusivity at the club. “Everybody’s wondering what it is,” he said. “They think it’s only for certain people, like rich people or something, but it’s not. Everybody seems to like it, from what I’ve heard.”
Cinephiles have plenty of other options as well: Tennessee Aquarium’s Imax 3D Theater, discounted second-run showings at Regal Hamilton Place and the chance to combine a movie with a trip to the arcade at the East Ridge Rave 18, which also features a party room.
