Fields wins District 2; Hullander new trustee

Political neophyte Jim Fields defeated three-term District 2 Hamilton County Commissioner Richard Casavant among contested races Tuesday night.

Elsewhere, District 9 Commissioner Bill Hullander knocked off incumbent Carl Levi in the Republican primary race for trustee. He had no Democrat opposition.

Other primary winners among commissioners were incumbent Republican Fred Skillern in District 1, incumbent Democrat Warren Mackey in District 4, incumbent Democrat Greg Beck in District 5, incumbent Republican Larry Henry in District 7, Republican Tim Boyd in District 8 and Republican Hamilton County School Board member Chester Bankston in District 9.

Primary wins set up contested races in District 6 between incumbent Democrat John Allen Brooks and Republican Joe Graham and between Mr. Boyd, a Republican, and Democrat Kenny Smith.

The general election is Aug. 5.

Republican Jim Coppinger in District 4 was unopposed for reelection. He will be unopposed on the Aug. 5 ballot.

Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey also cruised to victory. He will face an independent candidate, Richard Ford, in the Aug. 5 primary.

In August, incumbent Republican Sheriff Jim Hammond will face Lloyd “Bodie” Clendenen, incumbent County Clerk W.F. “Bill” Knowles will face R. Chester Heathington, incumbent Democrat Juvenile County Clerk Ron Swafford will face Gary Behler and incumbent Republican Register of Deeds will face Democrat Jeff Brown.

Incumbent Democrat Circuit Court Clerk Paula Thompson and incumbent Democrat Criminal Court Clerk Gwen Tidwell were unopposed Tuesday and will be unopposed on the Aug. 5 ballot.
