Mary Benning

Mary Elizabeth "Skeet" Benning, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010, in a local hospital.

She was a member of Miracle Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Benning Sr.; grandsons, Randall "Yogi" Hamler, Michael Benning and Terrance Patton; sister, Dorothy Smith; four sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law.

Survivors: devoted children, Rufus (Annie) Benning Jr., Larry Benning (Sandra Tremble), Mahood Abdullah, Brenda and Linda Benning and Dewayne (Shon) Benning, all of Chattanooga; devoted granddaughter, India (Courtney) Robinson; and 15 other grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; brother, Stanley Turner, of Chattanooga; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Benning; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Marie Fleming

Marie Jeanette Williams Fleming, 94, of Spartanburg, S.C., passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, in Chattanooga.

She was born Dec. 15, 1915, in Rutherfordton, N.C., the daughter of the late James Knox and Frances Candace McMillan Williams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cranford Harold Fleming; and her son, Dr. Harold E. Fleming Sr.

After graduating from Holly Springs High School, Marie attended Asheville Normal Teacher's College in Asheville, N.C. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg for more than 70 years.

Marie Williams Fleming was the epitome of a beautiful Southern lady with all the charm that embodies. Her vivacious, creative spirit, quick wit, zeal for life, and love of people made indelible impacts on every life she touched. Her passions for cooking and gardening, especially irises, were prevalent throughout her home and yard. Helping and giving to others were her greatest joy. Her boundless love of God, her family, and her friends were the essence of her being.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Candace Marie Fleming Chazen (Robert Sr.) of Lookout Mountain; her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth B. Fleming, of Spartanburg, S.C.; nine grandchildren, Dr. H.E. Fleming, Jr. (Andrea), of Palo Alto, Calif., Dr. Nicholas F. Fleming (Lisa), of Spartanburg, S.C.; Dr. Elizabeth A. Fleming, of Spartanburg, S.C.; Melissa Jo Fleming, of New York, N.Y.; Dr. Russell C. Dreyer (Brandye), of Seymour, Tenn.; Kendall H. Dreyer, of Chattanooga; Theodore H. Dreyer (Christina) of Chattanooga, J. Daniel Dreyer (Melody) of Richmond, Va., and Robert G. Chazen Jr., of Lookout Mountain; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rachel Gossett, 67, of Hixson, died Thursday, May 13, 2010.

Rachel was a nurse for several years. Preceding her in death were parents, James and Lillie Freeman; and brother, Newell Freemen.

Survivors include three daughters, April (Jim) Hinson, Hixson, Valerie Edge, Chattanooga, Lillie Ruth Deolski, Missouri; two sons, Billy and Rickey Gossett, both of Chattanooga; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Buddy Freeman, Pikeville; several nieces and nephews.

Loyd Charles Kelley, 84, of Lookout Valley, passed away on Friday, May 14, 2010, with his family at his side.

He was a retiree from Dixie Yarns and spent his years fishing, gardening and enjoying the company of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Wanda Tucker Kelley; daughters, Aliene Hall, Laney Grice (Mike), Connie Mullins Tyndall (Ronald), Kathy Mullins Harris (Lonnie), Pamela Upchurch. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, David McGill (Melissa), Lena Justice (John), Heather Tyndall Reed, Jeremy Tyndall (Sarah), Cody Pell, Mallory Pell and William Lambert. He is survived by five great-grandchildren, Austin McGill, Elliott Justice, Dixie Reed, Addie Reed and Ashlyn Tyndall.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Beatrice "Bea" Heidt Marshall, 96, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, May 14, 2010.

Jere Martin

Jere Earl Martin died Wednesday, May 12, 2010. He was 80.

Jere was born and raised in Chattanooga.

Mr. Martin was a member of St. John United Methodist Church. A Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he was a veteran of the Korean War. Jere was a graduate of Chattanooga High School (Class of 1947), the University of Chattanooga and a retired employee (34 years) of General Motors Acceptance Corporation.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rosellen; a son, Andy Martin and wife, Kari, of Chattanooga; a daughter, Melissa "Missy" Morgan, of Nashville; two grandsons, Justin and Tyler Morgan; and two granddaughters, Morgan and Campbell Martin.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. John United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sherry Boles officiating and the Rev. Dallas Beck assisting.

Visitation will be today, May 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arles Miller

Arles A. Miller, of Athens, Tenn., died Thursday, May 13, 2010, at his daughter's home in Brayton, Tenn.

He was born Jan. 18, 1918, and his childhood home was on Signal Mountain. After graduating from Central High in 1937, he was employed at Davenport Hosiery Mill for 20 years. For many years he owned and operated Mile Straight Amoco. Then he owned the Daisy Exxon. After living in Soddy-Daisy for almost 50 years, he moved to Athens, Tenn., in 1997. He attended Decatur Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In the 1950s he, along with his wife, Billie (the pianist), Clarence Hall, Lorene Varner and Will Bowers, made up the gospel quartet known as "the Friendly Five."

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joe and Ina Miller; brothers, Argyl and Amos; and sister, Claytie Motley.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Billie Ruth; son, Ivan; daughters, Ina Carol Ring and Grace Arlene Knowles; sister, Pauline Dawson; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. in the North Chapel with Dr. Walter Ring and Pastor Wayne Coulter officiating.

Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Jerome Montgomery Sr. departed this life on Monday, May 10, 2010.

He was a 1990 graduate of Kirkman Technical High School. He worked as a caregiver for Rosewood Supportive Services.

Esther Owen

Esther Riley Owen, 99, died on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at her home at Alexian Grove.

She was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church where she served as Director of Children's Education for many years. After her retirement from that position, she continued to be active in developing means for small groups within the church to develop caring relationships, most recently with Crafty Capers.

She was a graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., where she majored in piano performance. She continued her love of music all her life and was a longtime member of the MacDowell Club. She also was a member of the North Chattanooga Book Club and served on the Board of the Holston Home.

She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Lucian E. Owen.

She is survived by two daughters, Esther Rosa Macllroy and Christine Knuteson; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2010, in the Kate Lyle West Chapel of First-Centenary United Methodist Church with Dr. David Harr officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service.

Interment will be in Denmark, S.C.

Bennie Wallace Sr.

SWEETWATER -- Bennie Lee Wallace Sr., 91, went home to be with Jesus Thursday, May 13, 2010, in the Sweetwater Hospital.

He was the founding president of the East Ridge Band Club in Chattanooga.

Veteran of World War II enlisted Feb. 28, 1941, was in the first invasion in North Africa. He commanded the Guard of Honor for the surrender of enemy forces in his sector. He was involved in the invasion of Sicily at Gelas and took the first group of prisoners. He was involved in the invasion of Sicily the Pal Islands, and Quar and the Ulithie Islands, participated in the invasion of Ihena Islands areas Okiiua the last invasion of the war. He received the following metals good conduct, World War II Victory Metal European Africa Middle East Service Metal with two bronze stars, American service and defense with two bronze star, and the combat infantry badge He was an expert on the MI rifle, carbine 30.50 Marine gun, Thomas submachine gun and 81 MS mortor. He also made first and last invasion.

He was a life member of the Sweetwater Gold Star Post 5156. Ben loved music. He sang in the church choir and the Sweetwater Valley Citizen for the Arts Community Choir for many years. Because of this love he purchased a grand piano for First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater, where he was a member, and he attended the builders Sunday School Class. He retired from the South Central Bell after 33 years of Service.

Ben was a people person, never met a stranger and had a great sense of humor. He loved everyone, especially helping the children and the needed.

Preceded in death by parents, Pearlie and Nancy Stooke Wallace; infant brother, Mack and sister Edith; Brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Dorothy Wallace, James and Myrtle Wallace, A.J. and Ernestine Wallace; and his first wife, Beatrice Cornelison Wallace.

Survivors include second wife, the love of his life for 221/2 years, Anna M. Wallace, Sweetwater; son and daughter-in-law, Benny Lee and Jeanette Wallace Jr., of Greenwich, Conn.; brothers and sister-in-law, Jack and Edith Wallace, of Athens, Dr. Joe and Shirley Wallace, Crossville, Tenn. Special niece and nephews, Nancy and the Rev. Ted Baker, of Sweetwater. Special friend, Jim Shepard, Vicky Burnette and Nancy Marler; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday, May 16, at First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. with a celebration of life service to follow at 5:30 with Rev. Carl Oaks and Rev. Julian Walton officiating.

Interment Monday, May 17, at 10 a.m. in West View Cemetery with full military honors to be provided by Sweetwater VFW Gold Star Post 5156 and members of the Monroe County Disabled American Veterans Chapter 93.

Honorary pallbearers will be the veterans of the VFW Gold Star Post 5156 and the church choir.

Doyle Camp

FORT OGLETHORPE -- Doyle Camp, 81, passed away Monday, May 10, 2010, in his home.

He was an active member of Fort Oglethorpe Church of Christ, having served as Teacher, Deacon, Elder, and Secretary/Treasurer. He was a former Mayor of Fort Oglethorpe, a publisher of the Busy Shopper Inc., and also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was the best husband, father and grandfather anyone could ever have; we will miss him so very much.

Survivors include his wife, Renette Camp; sons and daughter-in-law, Kent Camp and Jeff Camp and Toni Jové; daughter and son-in-law, Andi and Bill Manuel; grandchildren, Morgan Manuel, Liam Manuel and Nathan Jové; brothers and sister-in-law, Harold and Pat Camp and Joe Bates; and several nieces and nephews.

No visitation is scheduled, and burial will be private.

CHICKAMAUGA -- Stephen Raymond Campbell, 63, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010.

He was a lifelong resident of Chickamauga and a member of Chickamauga First Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War before retiring from Fillauer O&P in 2007. Steve enjoyed working in the garden while being surrounded by his dogs.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bill and Carrie Campbell and Bill and Myrtle Madairs; and his best friend, Bill McCurdy.

Steve is survived by his parents, Raymond and Frances Campbell, of Chickamauga; sister, Kathie and Ray Tinker of Ringgold; nieces, Dina Tinker, Lacey Tinker and Maci, all of Chickamauga; nephew, Greg Tinker; and friend, John Barton.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, in the funeral home chapel with Brother Charles McElhaney officiating.

DALTON -- Jane Raines Dennard, 67, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010, at her residence.

She was the daughter of the late Fred and Edna Anderson Raines and was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Bob Dennard Sr.

Jane was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dalton; was a Grey Lady at Hamilton Medical Center; an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society; and Jane was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bob Dennard Jr., of Dalton; children, Blake and Christie Dennard, of Chattanooga, Tracy and Linwood Clement, of Dalton; sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Dr. Charles Gillespie, of Albany, Ga.; mother-in-law, Helen McCamy Dennard, of Dalton; brother-in-law, Tom Dennard, of Dalton; sister-in-law, Candy Lynville, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; grandchildren, Kaitlind Clement and Leah Clement; nieces and nephews.

Paul Dietz

DULUTH -- Commander Paul Truett Dietz passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Born to John and Joyce Dietz in Ringgold, Ga., on Sept. 26, 1925, Paul attended Mount Berry School and graduated in 1942. While attending Georgia Tech he cut his college career short to enlist in the Navy. The following year he volunteered for flight training and received his wings and commission in 1944. Dietz remained on active duty until 1949, and then returned to Georgia Tech, where he continued his studies until he was recalled to active duty in 1952. In 1959 Paul transferred to the Navy Reserves and continued flying until his retirement in 1971. He truly enjoyed his 24 year naval career, and he also served his country by working for the NPIC and DIA from 1961 until 1982.

Paul Dietz was preceded in death by Evelyn, his wife of 54 years; and sons, John Paul and Mark Stephen.

He is survived by brother, Willis Dietz, of Boynton, Ga.; daughter, Deborah Dietz, of Big Sky, Mont.; son, Michael Dietz, of Duluth, Ga.; daughters, Suzi Dietz, of Harrisburg, Pa.; and Paulette Kachilla, of Cambridge, Ohio; grandchildren include Marie Dietz and Carol Dietz, of Atlanta, Paul Dietz and Evie Dietz, of Manassas, Va., Andrew Kachilla, of Zanesville, Ohio, Emily Kachilla, of Monroe, La., Steven Kachilla, of Cambridge, Ohio, John-Michael Dietz and Truett Dietz, of Duluth, Ga., Jordan Kinder, of Manassas, Va.

Paul will be buried next to Evelyn and John Paul in Arlington National Cemetery.

Cecil Loyd Jr.

STEVENSON -- Cecil Cicero "C" Loyd Jr., 85, died Friday, May 14, 2010, at Park Springs Skilled Nursing Facility in Stone Mountain, Ga.

He was the son of the late Cecil C. and Esther Kansas Williams Loyd Sr. born June 22, 1924, in Stevenson. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of U.S. Navy Electrical School. He was a graduate of UTK. He built and operated the Loyd's Feed Mill, built and managed the Highway 72 West Shopping Center and owned the Piggly Wiggly. He was a past member of Alabama Milk Commission having served for 10 years and owned Loyd's Dairy. He was also a member of Alabama Farmer Federation, VFW Post 10564, Quarterback Club, Stevenson Civic Club, Scottsboro-Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and a member and Deacon of First Baptist Church in Stevenson.

Besides his parents, Cecil was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Annie Ruth Frost Loyd (he died 5 months, 1 hour and 7 minutes after she died); sister, Sandy Loyd Buckner.

He is survived by children, Sharon Loyd, Fannielou (Don) Garner, Cecil C. "Bo Jack" (Karen) Loyd III, all of Georgia; grandchildren, Claudia Garner, Weston Garner, Matt Loyd and Dillon Loyd; brothers, Bo Loyd and Bill Jack Loyd, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The funeral will be today, May 15, at 2 p.m. CDT at Rudder Funeral Home in Stevenson, Ala., with visitation two hours prior to the service time (noon-2 p.m. CDT).

Interment will be at Stevenson City Cemetery.
