Marguerite Brown

Marguerite Jeannine Brown, 75, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010, at her residence.

Mrs. Brown was a graduate of Soddy-Daisy High School Class of 1953 and enjoyed attending the frequent reunions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Brown II; and daughter, Kelly Joanne Brown.

Survivors include her daughter, Frankie Walker, of Soddy-Daisy, William (Beatrice) Robert Brown III, of Cedar Rapids, Texas; stepson, Tracy L. (Miki) Brown; brother, James (Shirley) May, of Soddy-Daisy; grandchildren, Kerry D. Dunn; Michael J. Brown, Elesa Ramirez and Garrett R. Brown; and great-grandchildren, Payton M. Walker and Hanna N. Dunn.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2010, in the Legacy Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ken Duggan officiating.

Interment will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery.

William S. Campbell, 84, passed away Saturday, May 15, 2010.

Timothy F. Corwin, 50, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

He was the son of the late Wilbur and Antoinette Corwin.

Larry Finney

Larry Allen Finney, 64, of Georgetown passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at his residence.

He was a retired Captain from the Chattanooga Police Dept., and was a member of New Shepherd Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by parents, Charles Finney and Norma Savannah Finney.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Finney; son, Michael Finney; daughter, Mary Finney, Jerry Finney; sisters, Gail (Mike) Phillips and Deborah Finney; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Fitch

Elizabeth "Betty" Snodgrass Fitch, age 80, wife of the late Edward L. Fitch, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

Betty was also preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Elizabeth Smith Snodgrass; and a brother, William H. Snodgrass Jr.

Left to cherish her wonderful memories are two loving daughters, Elizabeth F. Varner and Amy R. Fitch; a beloved grandson, Brett J. Varner and his wife, Terra R. Varner; a sister-in-law, Nancy Carter Snodgrass Pendergrass and nieces, nephews and friends.

Betty graduated from Spring City High School; one of her outstanding awards was the Thespian Award which she received her senior year. She went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Middle Tennessee State University from which she received a B.S. degree in elementary education. Betty's teaching career spanned 42 years, 38 of which were in the Hamilton County School System and the Chattanooga Public Schools. She began teaching in Polk County, Tenn., where her late husband was Superintendent of Schools. She also taught in Georgia before her teaching tenure in Tennessee at DuPont Elementary School from which she retired and from where she received the Tennessee Congress of Parents and Teachers Life Membership Award from the DuPont Elementary School PTA. Long before it was popular, Betty felt strongly that the arts should be a part of the school curriculum; with the help of Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga, she used her abilities to enhance the education of her students.

It was Betty's belief that an educator should belong to, support, and seek knowledge from educational associations. Before retirement she was associated with the Hamilton County and Chattanooga Education Associations, Tennessee Education Association, East Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association. She also held membership in the DuPont Elementary School PTA, the Association for Childhood Education, and the International Reading Association, assisting with workshops and presentations when her school hosted meetings.

At her death, Betty held membership in the Chattanooga Hamilton County Retired Teachers' Association, Tennessee Retired Teachers' Association and the National Education Association. She formerly held membership in the Chattanooga Chapter of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge and Chi Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Sorority for Outstanding Women Educators. She was presently a member of Lambda Chapter of Psi State/Tennessee of National Kappa Kappa Iota Organization for Educators where she was serving on the Executive Board as President-Elect as well as devotional and hostess chairman including most recently the 2009 Psi State/Tennessee State Convention in Chattanooga. Her Thespian flair for decorating was exercised in her chairmanship and hosting local and state meetings; as chairman of devotions, she delivered and involved members in unique and thought-provoking soliloquies.

She had served in various state posts, offices, committees, and chairmanships in Gamma Conclave and on the Psi State/Tennessee Executive Board. She assisted with the National Tennessee Convention of Kappa Kappa Iota in Nashville, Tenn., and with a Tennessee sister's National Presidency festivities. After retirement, Betty became a Chattanooga American Red Cross Volunteer at Memorial Hospital, Northpark where she volunteered one day weekly for over ten years until she became too ill to serve.

For years, Betty and her family were members of First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga; she and her late husband were also members of the Lee Anderson Sunday School Class. At her death, she was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church where she volunteered as a phone hostess.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel.

Services for Elizabeth will follow at 11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel with the Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Spring City Cemetery.

Sarah Gregory

Sarah Foster Gregory passed to the next phase of her life after an extended illness on Tuesday, May 18, 2010. "She fought the good fight and lived a good life"

Born May 14, 1919, in Lincoln, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Fred and Mamie Foster of Dalton, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Cleve" Gregory; son, Robert "Bob" Gregory; and grandson, David Gregory.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in law, Steve and Christine Gregory, of Nashville; daughter-in-law, Peggy Gregory, of Chattanooga; granddaughters, Donna Savas (Mrs. Ted), of Alpharetta, Ga., Heather Anderson (Mrs. Ray), of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Jessica Dodd, of Nashville. She has eight great-grandchildren

Mrs. Gregory was a resident of the East Ridge Retirement Center and a longtime member of Brainerd Baptist Church of Chattanooga.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date by the family.

H. Dean Gross, 71, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, May 20, 2010.

Don Haley Sr.

Don Haley Sr., 66, of Chattanooga, joined the Lord on Friday, May 14, 2010.

Don was strong in his faith in the Lord and stands by Him now. He was scouted in high school for his pitching arm by the majors until a break mishap ended his ballplaying career. Don was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and was in the restaurant business for many years serving as manager of The Longhorn's across the Chattanooga area and the Town & Country Restaurant in Dalton, Ga. He was former president of the Chattanooga Restaurant Association. He was a gracious host and loved interacting with his customers and friends throughout the years.

He will be greatly missed and dearly remembered by his family, friends, and brothers and sisters at Deliverance Outreach Ministries. He loved you all tremendously.

Don was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Hassie Maw Haley; great-grandfather and great-grandmother, Luther and Flora Mae Sprouse; father, Charles Haley; sister, Jean Bates; mother, Bonnie Haley; and wife, Delilah.

Margaret Hammond

Margaret Louise Cain Hammond, 78, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 17, 2010.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Jethro Hammond Sr.

Survivors include four sons, Jethro Hammond Jr., William (Barbara) Hammond, Thomas (Beverly) Hammond and Michael Hammond, all of Chattanooga; two grandsons, William Hammond Jr. and Kendal Hammond, of Chattanooga; two brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, in the Chapel at John P. Franklin Funeral Home with Rev. Edmund Lockard officiating.

George Huff

George Huff's last flight was taken on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, just ten days short of his 91st birthday.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot, flying with both the 301st and 454th bomber groups in the European theater of operations. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Clusters for his valor after 50 heroic missions over Europe.

He was a Chattanooga native and graduate of Central High School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a degree in accounting. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad, then Southern Railway, after many years of service.

He was a long time resident of Signal Mountain. His church affiliation was with Signal Mountain Baptist Church, having been a member for 42 years. The last three years of his life were spent as a resident of Summit View Assisted Living. His family wishes to thank the staff and administration of Summit View for helping him to have some quality of life during his long illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Morgan and Ethel Haun Huff; and a brother, J. Roddy Huff.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Ernestine Huff; daughter, Charlotte Huff-Fogel (Arthur); son, Clint Huff; sister, Trophine Davis, of Brookhaven, Miss.; brother, Robert Huff (Herta), of Redondo Beach, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Anne Huff, of Signal Mountain and Barbara Meacham, of Farmington, N.M.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at Signal Mountain Baptist Church Chapel. The Reverends Sally Ensley and Steven Wright will officiate.

The family will receive friends before and after the service at the chapel.

Burial will be held in Maplewood Cemetery in Smyrna, Tenn. on Sunday, May 23, with military honors.

Elliot Jaquith

Elliot Freeman Jaquith, 83, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.

He resided in Hendersonville, N.C. for 47 years and was a recent resident of Alexian Inn, Signal Mountain. He was born on March 12, 1927 in Boston, Mass. He served his country during World War II in the US Coast Guard. He earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the University of Rochester and a graduate degree in mathematics from Rutgers University. He was employed by DuPont Corporation for 34 years.

Elliot was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Armina (Pete) Jaquith; son, Keith Elliot Jaquith; and parents, Elliot and Dorothy Jaquith. He is survived by his son, Douglas Foster Jaquith (Susan); grandchildren, Laura Catalanotto (Brandon), Abby Butler (Greg), and Brad Jaquith; and great-grandchildren, Madison and Cailyn Butler and Lilly Catalanotto.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Mt. Flyers Club, the Thunderbird Club, and a former scoutmaster for Troop 601. He traveled with the Friendship Force to several countries including, England, Ireland, Germany, Australia and Turkey.

He had a zest for life and enjoyed his roles as a neighborhood auto mechanic, computer troubleshooter, bread maker for church suppers, and chief cook for campground waffle breakfasts.

A memorial service is planned for Monday, May 24, 2010, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville, N.C. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

William Philip Lang III, 71, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at his home after a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Philip and Sarah Nevin Lang. Philip was born in Cleveland, Tenn., and was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. A graduate of the Baylor School, he attended the University of Tennessee and the University of Chattanooga.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Martha Nichols Lang, his son, William Philip Lang IV, and his wife, Stacey; his daughter, Elizabeth Lang Jones and her husband, Walker; and three grandchildren, Nevin Jones, Walker Jones and Bobby Jones who affectionately called him "Hi Daddy". He is also survived by his sister, Amelia Lang Hodges and her husband, Sandy.

Homer Pickett

Homer Ray Pickett, 67, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, in a hospital in Cartersville, Ga.

He was a lifelong resident of Signal Mountain and retired from Sherman & Riley after 43 years of service.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Dora Lusk Pickett; and brother, Harry Pickett. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Frances Patterson

SHELBYVILLE -- Frances Juanita Dowdy Patterson, 76, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Community Care of Rutherford County.

She was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Shiloh, Tenn., to the late Arvil Odell and Alma Juanita Bright Dowdy. She was Home Demonstration Agent with the University of Tennessee Extension Agency with 33 years of service. She was a 1955 graduate of the University of Tennessee. She was an active member of First Baptist Church Depot Street where taught Sunday school and was a choir member for 55 years. She was also a devoted member of the Community Bible Study.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John O. Patterson, of Shelbyville; a son, Brent Patterson, and his wife, Fay, of Shelbyville; and a daughter, Linda Patterson, of Lebanon; two brothers, Bill Dowdy, and his wife Katherine, of Signal Mountain, and Don Dowdy, and his wife Carolyn, of Ringgold, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include husband, Frank Bowers; sons, David Davis, Terry Pope, Jimmy Pope; stepchildren, Carolyn Duke and Wayne Pope; brother, Donald Tucker; sisters, Betty Tucker, Ann Young, Dorothy Harrelson, Bonnie Spears, Peggy Doherty; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

Geneva Crawford

ROSSVILLE -- Geneva Crawford, 89, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010, in a local hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, Rossville.

James Forester

ROSSVILLE -- James David "Jimmy" Forester, 42, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010, at his residence.

A native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, Jimmy was currently employed with the City of Collegedale and was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Grady Forester II and R.D. and Rudy Rich.

Survivors include his wife, Lori Forester; parents, James David Forester Sr., and Linda Gayle Barry Forester; daughter, Amber Forester; step-children, Kristen Carroll, Emily Boles and John Hahn; sister, Sheila Fairbanks; several aunts, uncles and nieces survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with Pastor Joel Jenkins officiating.

Burial will be Monday, May 24, at noon at Greenwood Cemetery.

ROME -- Larry Robert Gideon, 38, died Tuesday, May 18, 2010.

Funeral was 3 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Mason Funeral Home, Summerville.

Burial was in West Hill Cemetery.
