TWC survives in NAIA

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Tennessee Wesleyan jumped out to a quick lead on Cody Gaskill's three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, and the Bulldogs held to claima 12-11 win over Southern Polytechnic on in opening round play of the NAIA national tournament Friday.

With the win, the Bulldogs will join Lee University in the 10-team NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

After falling behind 3-0 and 5-2, Southern Poly scored five runs in the seventh inning to take an 8-5 lead over TWC.

The Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, and scored five of their own in the bottom of the eighth with Gaskill knocking in two more runs with a double to put TWC back on top.

Gaskill finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBIs.

n Gordon College 10, Chattanooga State 0: at Barnesville, Ga.: Chattanooga State was shut out in five innings by Gordon College in the first game of the NJCAA East Central district final on Friday.

The Tigers are now must win the nest two games to advance to the NJCAA Division I College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The second game of a possible three-game series is scheduled to be played today at 2 p.m.

Chattanooga State eliminated

The Chattanooga State softball team won its first game Friday in the NJCAA Division I softball tournament, but lost its second game to be eliminated from the tournament.

In the early game, the Tigers beat Seward County 8-0, with Haley Workman going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and picking up with win in the pitching circle.

Brittany Cooley had a two-run home run, and Kendall Bruning and Leah Kelley each had two hits.

The the second game, Chattanooga State's offense disappeared, with Laura Curtis and Alex Buffington getting the Tigers' only two hits in a 4-2 loss to Wallace State. Worman took the loss giving up two runs in the second and third innings.

Lee softball suspended

Lee did not paly Friday at the 2010 NAIA Softball National Championship after all games were been postponed due to inclement weather conditions.

The second round of pool play games scheduled for Friday will play at as scheduled on today. The third and final round of pool play will take place Monday.

Each of the eight winners of their respective pools will then advance to the double-elimination bracket, with the first round taking place Monday night at 10 p.m.
