Russell Adams

Russell S. Adams, 88, of Snyder, Okla., passed away Friday, May 7, 2010.

He was born May 13, 1921, in Crab Orchard, Tenn., and raised in the Crossville, Tenn., area. Mr. Adams was to become a veteran of WWII, serving in the ETO. After the war he married his wife of more than 50 years, Florrine Almond.

He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Dixie Marie Thurman; and son, Charles Andrew Adams.

He is survived by two sons, Thomas (Ruth) Adams, John Daniel (Renee) Adams; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vera Victoria Clarke, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010, at her home.

Paul Collins

Paul Thomas "Tom" Collins, 63, of East Ridge, gave up his battle with cancer and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 22, 2010.

He was a lifelong resident of East Ridge and a 1966 graduate of East Ridge High School. He received an honorable discharge in 1974, having served his country with the United States Army in Vietnam.

Tom was a member of and currently served as music director at Peoples Baptist Church of Rossville and formerly at Pathway Baptist Church of Apison and Philadelphia Baptist Church of Ringgold, Ga.

He was a football official with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association for 15 years. His highest achievement in his officiating career was in 2007 when he was selected to officiate a state tournament in Nashville. Tom was a member of Men of Epsion Sigma Alpha of Chattanooga.

Tom was employed by Luken Holdings Inc. of Chattanooga, where he served in maintenance at the Volunteer Building for 25 years. He received a degree in heating and air conditioning from Chattanooga State Community College and attended Edmondson Business College.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Joel Collins, who served for many years as music director at several local churches.

Survivors include his wife and best friend of nearly 20 years, Wanda Thrower Collins; daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Alan Thomas and Teresa and Bob Ballenger; grandsons, Burton Thomas and Jarrett Thomas, of Carrollton, Ga. He is also survived by his mother, Ann Collins Talley, of East Ridge; three sisters, Patty Tanner, of Little Rock, Ark., Nancy Wilson, of Rossville, and Lisa Lowery, of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Brother Steven Kellogg, Brother Bill Gardner and Brother John Carroll officiating.

Burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Dean officiating.

The family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. and after 5 p.m. on Tuesday and prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the new youth building under construction at Peoples Baptist Church, where Tom served as Sunday school teacher and Wednesday night OATH leader for the youth.

Marlene Dennis

Marlene Dennis, 54, of Middle Valley, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010.

A lifelong resident of the Tennessee Valley, she was a devoted daughter, mother, grand mommy, sister, aunt and friend.

She worked for Dr. J. Selzer at Hixson Pike Medical office, was a member of Central Baptist Church in Hixson and member of the Allemande Hall Cloggers. She loved dancing and enjoying life. Loving, outgoing and loyal to all she knew. She was loved by her family, friends and patients.

Marlene is survived by her daughter, Meredith (Jason) Franks; son, Michael Dennis; two grandchildren, Lillie and Lydia; mother, Willie Meriam Johnson; brother, Steve (Barbara) Johnson; sister, Pam (Stephen) Cormier; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; dog, Scooby.

Services will be held 3 p.m. today, May 24, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Brooks officiating.

Dimis Dowse

Dr. Dimis "Dee" Dowse, 78, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010.

She was an associate professor in the English department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1965-1981 and a professor in the philosophy and religion department from 1982-1996. She retired from UTC in 1996.

She received her BA from Geneva College, MA from the University of Chicago and Ph.D. in philosophy from Emory.

She is survived by her cat, Auti; friends, Debarah Harbuck, Nancy Pollard; and caregivers, Sharon Holland and Geraldine Long.

Special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga for their compassion and care of Dee.

Tom Mann

Thomas Gordon Mann, 68, of Harrison, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Mann.

Tom retired from BASF after 30 years of service and was currently co-owner of Eastern Rivers Inc. in Chattanooga.

He attended Bayside Baptist Church and was an avid golfer, who enjoyed fishing and spending time at the beach with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Mann, of Harrison; daughter, Michelle (Mike) Collier, of Cleveland, Tenn.; two sons, Thomas (Colleen) Mann, Greg Mann, both of Chattanooga; stepson, Ronnie (Jenny) Dunn; stepdaughter, Jill (Greg) Baughn, both of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, Drew Collier, Trey Dunn, Macy Collier, Cooper Baughn, Carter Baughn, Abigail Mann, Evalynn Mann; mother, Eva Boyd Mann, of East Ridge; two sisters, Wanda Langston, Memphis, Nancy Emerling, of Chattanooga; two brothers, Mickey (Toni) Mann, of Signal Mountain, Herb (Nancy) Mann, of Jasper, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

TRACY CITY - Bennie Dale Coffey, 61, passed away in a Nashville hospital Saturday, May 22, 2010.

Mr. Coffey was a retired clerk for the Monteagle Depot.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Joe Coffey, Ronnie Coffey and Jack Coffey; and a sister, Janie Reed.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Nunley Coffey, Tracy City, Tenn.; a brother, Bobby Coffey, Tracy City; special brother-in-law, Roger Dale Nunley; mother-in-law, Nerva Nunley; and special friends, Freddy Nunley and the Anna Ruth Layne family.

William Richardson

CLEVELAND - William "Bill" Herbert Richardson, 85, passed away May 22, 2010, at his home.

He was born in Hastings, W.Va., grew up in Arkansas, and also lived in Florida. Bill lived in Chattanooga for more than 35 years and was a retired sales engineer and private pilot.

Bill served our country in WWII in the Army Air Force as a pilot and was honorably discharged in 1946 with a rank of corporal. While in the service, he received a WWII Victory Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal.

He was a longstanding member of the Chattanooga Flyers Club, member of the Tasso Methodist Church in Cleveland and the Cleveland/Bradley Senior Center and an avid card player.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Drew Richardson, and brother, Robert Richardson.

Bill is survived by his son, Bill Richardson Jr.; daughters, Patty Silverman and Beverly Falls; four grandchildren: Stephanie Fant, of Tallapoosa, Ga., Bethany Silverman, of Cleveland, Drew Falls, of Tulsa, Okla., and Kara Falls Welten, of Buford, Ga.; three great-grandchildren: Sidney Fant and Grayson Fant, of Tallapoosa, Ga., and Ava Welton, of Buford, Ga., and sister, Margie Lee Coleman.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Reverend Michael Cutshaw officiating.

Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn. with military honors. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.

Clara Tennyson

ROSSVILLE - Clara Pendergrass Tennyson, 97, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010, at her residence.

After only 97 years and eight months on this earth, the Lord decided to take Clara home to be with Him. She has been a good Christian all of her life and was always ready for His coming; but He elected to leave her here for all of us who loved her. She was a member of The Crossing (East Ridge Church of God) for many years.

Clara was a good and faithful wife to William L. (Bill) Tennyson Jr., for almost 63 years before his death in 1994. Clara never worked outside the home and was always there for her children. She also took in, at various times, one sister, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, mother-in-law and father-in-law, and treated them like her own with never a complaint. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Clara was born in Birchwood, Tenn., to parents Jesse Pendergrass and Martha Allison, who preceded her in death; as did brothers, Earl Pendergrass and Harry Pendrgrass; sisters, Hazel Everett and Pauline Roark; daughter, Bobbie Jean Tennyson; sons, James (Jimmy) Tennyson and Charles Richard Tennyson, and great-grandson, Garrett Yemm.

Clara is survived by daughter, Clara Durgin and husband, David, of Rossville, Ga.; daughter, Betty Tennyson, of Rossville; daughter, Faye Levi and husand, Cecil, of Maryville, Tenn.; son, Paul Tennyson and wife, Linda, of Maryville; daughter-in-law, Linda Tennyson Hixon, of Rossville; brothers, Ben Frank Pendergrass and Kenneth Pendergrass, both of Chattanooga and sister, Louise Grube of Mobile, Ala. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Lucille Barham

BRIDGEPORT - Lucille Burrows Barham, 89, died Saturday, May 22, 2010, at NHC in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Thelma Lucille was the daughter of late Ed and Lilly Norris Burrows; born Aug. 15, 1920 in Wise, Va. She had worked as a retail clerk at Loyd's Department Store in Bridgeport, Ala., for over 25 years. She was a member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church and OES Chapter 181. Lucille was active at the Bridgeport Senior Center and served as an election clerk.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother who raised her, Mary Norris; husband, Grant Calvin "G.C." Barham; siblings, Richard Burrows, J.E. Burrows and Edna Burrows.

She is survived by her sons: Grant (Nancy) Barham, of Bridgeport, Ala., Edward (Jane) Barham, of Harrison, Tenn.; grandchildren: Grant E. Barham, Jennifer Barham, Steve Barham, Lisa Chapuran, Mandy Barham; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. CDT on Monday, May 24, at the funeral home chapel officiated by the Rev. Buster Timmons and the Rev. Richard Saylor.

Rene Tepper

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Rene B. Tepper was born on September 2, 1916 on a family farm near Scranton, Penn-sylvania and died Saturday, May 22, 2010, at her home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sara and Maurice Kaplan; her brother, Floyd Kaplan; her son, David Tepper, MD and two grandchildren, Brian and David Kusnetzky.

Rene was an outgoing and caring person who grew up in New York, attended fashion design school and after her marriage and her husband's medical training, lived many years in Chattanooga, Tenn. before retiring to Boca Raton, Fla. and then moving to the Kansas City area to be near her daughter and family.

Rene was active in leadership positions in the membership of Ochs Memorial Temple, the Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Center in Chattanooga where she also served as President of the UJA annual fundraising campaign.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Tepper, MD, of the home; her daughter, Cindy (Phil) Kusnetzky, of Kansas City; her grandchildren, Carol (Bruce) Jerwick, of Overland Park, Lisa Kusnetzky, of Kansas City, Michael (Julie) Tepper, of Atlanta, Ga., Jacaqueline (Ruth) Tepper, of Charleston, S. C., William (Mary) Tepper, of Columbia, S. C., and Anna Tepper, of Philadelphia, Pa.; and great-grandchildren, Jake, Neil and Lillian Tepper, Ann Carter Tepper, Michael and Lindsay Jerwick, and Ben, Carter and Madison Kusnetzky, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Nana was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and loved by all of her family. She will be missed by all.
