Meigs blanked again

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Meigs County's softball team had one of the most potent offenses in the Chattanooga area this season, but that wasn't what the developments from the TSSAA Class AA state tournament revealed.

The Lady Tigers' 7-0 loss to Unicoi County on Wednesday marked the second consecutive scoreless outing for Meigs County, which ends its season 37-9.

"We picked a heck of a time to not hit it," Senior catcher Kirstie Jennings said. "We hit it all year."

Jennings was one that actually did hit for the Lady Tigers, going 4-for-7 in the tournament, but the team collectively was 9-for-48.

"Hitting and defense have carried us all year," Meigs County coach Jeff Davis said. "We didn't hit, and we didn't play defense. That was a bad combination."

Unicoi scored six of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, which started with Brittney Depew's pop fly landing between three defenders for a double. Kelsey Peterson's double later in the inning drove in a run, but not before the first two runs had scored on an error. Emily Lovette and Harley Tittle added RBI singles before the rally was finished.

The Lady Tigers were District 5 champions this year and have gone 62-16 the last two seasons. The senior class had a lot to do with that.

"We had seven seniors and they all started," Davis said. "Most of them were four-year starters. They've all played together since they were 5 years old, pretty much. This season has been good."

Jennings is one of those seniors. She and Courtney Combs and Jill Davis have all signed with Bryan College. Ashley Shaver signed with Chattanooga State and Lindsay Arndts signed with Tennessee Wesleyan.

"It's going to be different not looking at third and seeing Ashley or not looking at center field and seeing Lindsey," Jennings said. "It's going to be hard to adjust."
