Cockfighting pit in Union County reported

LUTTRELL, Tenn. - Authorities in Union County say they know nothing about a cockfighting pit videotaped by a Knoxville television station.

WATE reported the cockfighting has been going on for decades because operators have managed to avoid detection.

The station said it saw fights on a Saturday in a barn with bleachers and a cage for the fighting along with two side pits. The station said there was evidence of blood in and around the cage, and feathers on the ground.

The station quoted property owner Gary Wood as saying off camera that his family has been in the cockfighting business for decades.

Chief Sheriff's Deputy James Breeding said the matter would have been investigated but his office knew nothing about it. He said there have been no complaints about cockfighting in years.
