Standing in the press box at The Citadel's Johnson Hagood Stadium about 90 minutes before kickoff last Saturday, University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield had some advice.
"Keep an eye out for the 'Hobnail,'" he said, smiling.
Anyone familiar with Georgia football lore would know what he meant. When Georgia beat Tennessee in 2001, quarterback David Greene faked a handoff and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to fullback Verron Haynes in the closing seconds to beat the Volunteers.
Legendary Georgia announcer Larry Munson then made one of his most memorable calls: "We just stepped on their face with a hobnail boot and broke their nose!"
Georgia called the play "P-44 Haynes," but when Satterfield decided to install it last week he gave it another name, "Hobnail."
Satterfield said before the game that UTC needed to be at about the 8-yard line to run it. In the second quarter, after a false-start penalty pushed the ball back to The Citadel's 7, the Mocs ran it.
With Sloan Allison lined up at fullback, quarterback B.J. Coleman faked a handoff and Allison ran through the line and caught the pass for UTC's second touchdown in its 28-10 win.
"It was perfect," Coleman said. "Sloan did a heck of a job."
Allison, a backup wideout last season who has mostly lined up at tight end this fall, was put in at fullback on a couple of running plays earlier in the game so The Citadel wouldn't immediately think of him as a receiving threat.
"The thing is, they played it pretty well," Satterfield said. "He made an unbelievable catch."
It was Allison's third touchdown catch of the season, which is tied for second on the team.
SoCon honors Williams
Mocs freshman running back Keon Williams from Red Bank rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns against The Citadel. It was his first career start, and Monday he picked up his first league award when he was named the Southern Conference freshman of the week.
Williams averaged 5.3 yards per carry as he became the first UTC freshman since Erroll Wynn in 2006 to rush for 100 yards.
The Mocs (3-2, 2-1), who host Georgia Southern (3-2, 1-1) on Saturday, have had five players earn SoCon weekly honors this season.
"I like when they get recognized," coach Russ Huesman said. "It's good for them and it's good for our program."

The Mocs continue to receive votes in The Sports Network poll and they had two points in Monday's coaches' poll, which is the first time UTC has been in any coach's Top 25 all season. ... Appalachian State remains No. 1 in both polls, and Georgia Southern is No. 18 in the coaches' and 21st in the SN poll.
