Fort Oglethorpe splits in softball

Third-ranked Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe split its softball doubleheader Wednesday in its best-of-three series in the second round of the GHSA state softball tournament. The host Lady Warriors beat Greater Atlanta Christian 11-10 in eight innings before falling 4-3 in the night cap.

Lakeview (32-2) will host GAC again today at 5 p.m. to see which team advances.

Maryanne Morgan was 3-for-5 in the opener and it was her two-run single with one out in the bottom of the eighth that provided the winning margin. Hayley Burnette was 3-for-3 with two doubles and Madeline Bray, the winning pitcher in relief, was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Bray was the losing pitcher in the second game despite limiting GAC (22-14) to four hits and striking out eight. Her double provided one of the runs in LFO's two-run third inning.

* Class AAA: At LaGrange, Ringgold (20-14) split with No. 9-ranked LaGrange (23-7), winning 4-0 in the first game before losing 5-3. The teams play again today at LaGrange at 5 p.m.

Kinsey Sholl was the winning pitcher in the first game. Ericka Bynum drove in two of the runs and Allie Baker and Adrian Thornton were each 2-for-3.

Hayley Robinson was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for the Lady Tigers in the second game.

* Class AAAA: At Danielsville, top-ranked Madison County defeated Northwest Whitfield 8-3 and 3-1. Ninth-ranked Northwest ends its year 20-13.

The Lady Bruins took a 2-0 lead on Karlie Henson's double in the top of the second inning in the first game, but ended up making a season-high seven errors in the game and also left 12 on base. They stranded eight in the second game.

Amy Shampo was 2-for-3 in each game for Northwest. Ashley Conner was 2-for-4 with a double in the opener and Colbie Thomas went 2-for-3 in the second game.

Emily Boyd was relieved with one out in the sixth in the first game after giving up the eight runs -- three earned. She also took the loss in the nightcap after going the distance and matching her first-game effort of seven strikeouts.
