Eight-year-old boy hit by church bus, in serious condition

An 8-year-old boy hit by a church bus is in serious but stable condition at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital, police say.

The child, whose name is not being reported, lived at 1507 Hickory Valley Road and was struck on Wednesday night, but the parents didn't call police until Thursday morning, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary.

During the investigation, police learned that a church bus was taking children home from Hickory Valley Baptist Church, Weary said. The driver, William Ingram, told police that he had stopped at the wrong apartment building and was asked to pull forward to the next. As he did, the bus door was open and the 8-year-old either fell or jumped from the bus and was was run over as it pulled forward, Weary said.

Ingram stopped and called the parents of the child, but did not call 911, Weary said. The parents of the child, who don't speak English, then drove him to T.C. Thompson, she said.

Charges may be pending further investigation since Ingram did not report the incident as required by law, Weary said.
