For Sylvia McCollum, something happens everyday that triggers an idea and the desire to run home and paint.

"Just walk slowly, and you will find subject matter is bountiful," said the Chattanooga native who lives in Dallas.

McCollum is the featured artist at Yada Yada, a gallery opened by her sister Jennifer Mathews about a month ago.

"I think the strength of Sylvia's work is its whimsical quality that makes people smile,' said Mathews. "People seem to love her bright colors and the cheerful nature of her paintings."

In fact, McCollum began making art about six years ago to help brighten the days of a special friend. She created more than 700 images and discovered that, not only did her paintings cheer up her friend, but the creative process intrigued her.

The self-taught artist describes her style as "totally whimsical." Her intention is to evoke emotion. Pleasing color combinations are her second priority. Subject matter comes to her intuitively.

"About 80 percent of the time, it turns out to be dogs or monkeys," said McCollum. "It's not always a plan; it just happens."

Yada Yada, 112 Woodland Ave., is open noon-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. Call 718-6763.
