Area preparing during the quiet before the storm

Area emergency management officials are hoping for the best but making preparations for bad weather this evening.

Bledsoe County Emergency Management Director Paul Putman said he has been calling up emergency responders making sure they are ready for whatever could take place.

"We have a wait and see attitude," Putman said. He added he didn't want to open up any shelters too soon until they see what happens. However, he added that if needed they could set up shelters.

In Bradley County, EMA Director Troy Spence said he has been passing along information from the National Weather Service has it comes in.

"We're crossing our fingers and toes," Spence said. "We hope it diminishes before it gets here."

Spence said he has been calling local businesses and industries to make sure they are aware of the weather so shift changes don't occur when the storm hits Bradley County.

Sequatchie and Meigs County EMA directors are using amateur radio operators to monitor the airwaves. However, both said they are "on hold" to see what happens.

Sequatchie EMA Director Rusty Cheatham said schools were dismissed earlier in the day in anticipation of the weather.

In Meigs County, EMA Director Tony Finnell said most employers will have their shift change before the storm passes through Meigs County. He added the Meigs County Highway Department would be on alert throughout the evening and he would be on the job until the storm has passed the area.
