Legless actor terrifies crowds at Chattanooga haunted house

For 26-year-old Danny Frasier, spending the last five Halloweens working haunted houses is not just fulfilling -- it's hugely entertaining.

"I love laughing at the scared ones, the things they do," he said. "People can't comprehend what's going on when they're cutting me in half."

Born with underdeveloped legs -- and impressively thick skin -- the auto detailer from Oneonta, Ala., is undoubtedly the star of Chattanooga's newest haunted house, Massacre on Meighan at 14th Avenue and Cowart Street. The $20 haunted house runs through Sunday night.

In one of the final scenes of the haunted house, Frasier lies on a table with a pair of prosthetic legs, wide-eyed and begging to be set free. Another actor takes a chainsaw to his midsection, and Frasier's torso drops face-down onto the floor, fake intestines spilling from his lifeless body.

Visitors have just enough time to marvel at what appears to be an impressive illusion, before Frasier springs to life. Still pleading for help, he pulls his body around with his arms at breakneck speed, chasing the attendees through a darkened hallway and onto the next horror.

"People can't figure it out. Really, they're amazed." said Kenneth Ward, founder of the haunted house and an event manager from Falkville, Ala.

Ward met Frasier at an motorcycle event seven years ago, and the following year asked him to participate in his massacre-themed haunted houses, which take place in a couple of cities in Alabama. This is the event's first season in Chattanooga.

So is it disturbing to have dozens of people run from you in terror four nights a week?

Not a bit, Frasier said.

"It is just awesome," said Frasier, who was born with fetal-alcohol syndrome. Doctors amputated his abnormally formed legs above the knee when he was 3 years old, he said.

He admits he was initially hesitant to participate Ward's haunted houses.

"I was wondering, 'How is everybody going to take this?' But after the first couple times, it was just like, 'Wow, I love this,'" said Frasier, who typically gets around on his hands, rather than using a wheelchair.

"I've got tremendous upper-body strength and I want to be able to show people that, hey, if I can do it, you can do it," he said.

Frasier does encounter the rare attendee who makes a disrespectful comment to him, and he's been stepped on, on more than one occasion.

Of those who are disrespectful, he said, "You gotta just overlook it. We're here to have fun."

Frasier said he has done motivational speaking to inspire people with disabilities, and to spread awareness about the effects of alcohol and drug use while pregnant. He also sings country and gospel music, and has performed as an Elvis tribute artist.

"He's probably got the best spirit of anyone you'll ever meet," Ward said.
