Most of the time, thousands of oil wells operate on land in our country and in waters off our coasts, and throughout the world, with few serious mishaps. But now, while we are still digesting details about the recent big BP oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, there has come bad news that another oil platform has exploded and burned off Louisiana’s coast.
There were seven active production wells involved in that platform. But fortunately, initial reports from the disaster indicated there were no deaths.
At first, there were fears of another oil leak into Gulf waters, such as occurred with destructive environmental effects in the BP case. But fears of oil in the water have since faded.
We depend heavily upon domestic oil production as well as upon tremendous quantities of oil from throughout the world. We “run on oil.” We are pleased when oil is produced safely and are greatly concerned when there are problems. Though there are many varied sources of energy, oil is one thing in our automobile society that we and much of the rest of the world simply cannot do without.
Most of the time, oil is produced safely, but when there is trouble, it can be very costly in many ways.
