Georgia state parks may cut out free Wednesdays

T. MARYS, Ga. — James Holloway, of Jacksonville, Fla., is among many people who take advantage of free admission on Wednesdays at Georgia's state parks. But the state has said it may end that practice to save money.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is proposing to eliminate free Wednesdays, the single day each week when the $5 cost of admission per car, actually a parking fee, is not assessed.

According to a department release, “the proposal is in response to the state’s budget crisis and the Georgia General Assembly’s direction for the state park system to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on state general funds.”

The department’s board will vote on the proposal at its Oct. 27 meeting in Savannah.
