‘September Song’

September has barely begun. It’s still hot. But we know the seasons are changing.

Despite the words of the old standard “September Song,” we are not quite ready yet for falling leaves. Maybe they’re falling “up North,” but not yet “down South.”

Most vacations are over, but in Chattanooga summer is not quite over. It will linger awhile longer.

Most schools are back in session. Somehow, swimming just isn’t quite so appealing now.

Football is in the air. And nostalgia.

It still will be awhile before we feel really cool weather. But we are quite aware something is different. The lazy pace of August has passed. We are thinking a little differently in September. Fall clothes are in the stores. Air conditioning is still welcome, but it won’t be long before gas or electric or wood heat will come to mind. Are you ready? Is your heating system ready?

We fortunately live in a wonderful part of our country, where we have distinctly changing seasons. We experience and enjoy them all, with none usually too extreme nor too long. Fall and spring are pleasant punctuations between winter and summer.

But “change” is surely in the air. And most of us enjoy it.
