Sewanee rocks Quakers, 33-14

RICHMOND, Ind. — The Sewanee football team already has assured itself of a better season than 2009. After going 0-9 in 2009, the Tigers began their 2010 schedule by pounding Earlham 33-14.

Eight players carried the ball as Sewanee ran for 277 yards and totaled 420 on offense, with 19 first downs. After a missed 25-yard field goal on their opening possession, the Tigers held the Quakers to three plays and a punt and took the lead on a 65-yard run by freshman Chad Morehead.

Earlham tied the score at 7 late in the first quarter, but Sewanee scored the next 23 points. Fullback Zeke Wilson had two short-yardage touchdown runs in the second quarter, Trey Knighton kicked a 38-yard field goal just before halftime and freshman quarterback Lee Schurlknight hit Chalanks Brown for a 30-yard touchdown on Sewanee’s first possession of the second half.

Knighton added a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter.

Schurlknight was 8-of-12 passing for 125 yards in his college debut, and Morehead led the Sewanee rushing with 80 yards. Wilson ran for 58 and Schurlknight for 46, and Brown had 72 receiving yards.

Defensive back Alfonza Knight paced the stout Sewanee defense with 10 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble, and linebacker Andrew Walters had six solo stops among his eight tackles. Earlham totaled 249 yards on offense.

“Besides our two turnovers, I thought we played a complete football game — defense, offense and special teams,” Sewanee coach Robert Black said. “Defensively, it was just a team effort. ... The defense won the turnover mark. I’m very proud of our young guys up front and our veterans behind them.

“Offensively, both freshman quarterbacks did a great job. We had several different players touch the ball today, and it was a team effort all the way.”

The Tigers host Washington & Lee at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday. New Sewanee Hall of Fame inductees will be honored.
