Local doggy fashions hit New York runway

Chattanoogan Linda Higgins is an interior designer. Yet more and more people are associating her name with couture fashions for dogs.

Higgins’ handmade pieces, crafted from top-of-the-line fabrics and selling for $45 to $650, are being sold in pet boutiques across the country and online at www.dogdressesbylindahiggins.com.

Some of her fashions will be featured in the sequel to the film “Beverly Hills Chihuahua,” to be released in 2011.

Some of Higgins’ designer petwear fashions will be highlighted in the Rochester Fur Ball in New York. In fact, one of Higgins’ Chihuahuas, Miss Lucy, will be wearing a black, jewel-encrusted ball gown.

Higgins said she is excited about participating in the fundraising fashion show.

According to the event website, rochesterfurball.com, the black-tie gala for various pet charities will welcome guests escorted by their canine companions.

PETS AT COLLEGE Jasmine Parham’s new college roommate is a dear friend from back home. The roomie responds to “Leo” and never goes to class, but can perform some neat tricks.Leonora, a frisky border collie, and her owner, Parham, are among the first residents of the first pet-friendly dorm at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla.

Stetson is not the first college to have a pet-friendly dorm, but it’s among the relatively few schools — perhaps a dozen or so across the country — that have formal policies and accommodations.

The idea behind the dorm is to give students a familiar presence as they make the sometimes stressful transition from home to campus.
