Man shoots self in head after armed standoff with Chattanooga police

A man has shot himself in the head after an armed standoff with Chattanooga police.

The 29-year-old man, whose name has not been released, is at Erlanger hospital where he is listed in critical condition, said Sgt. Jerri Weary, Chattanooga police spokeswoman.

About 11 a.m. today, police were trying to execute an arrest warrant on the man for misdemeanor charges when he barricaded himelf in a home at 1116 Wheeler Ave., Weary said. The man had outstanding warrants for failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and filing a false police report stemming from a traffic crash that occurred on Monday.

The man's girlfriend was inside the home and tried to talk him into coming out but failed. She left the home and told police that her boyfriend was inside with a revolver, threatening to kill himself. After failing to talk the man out, police fired tear gas into the home, but the man still wouldn't leave.

A SWAT team entered the home and found the man on the living room with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

Weary said it's not precisely known why the man reacted the way he did to the misdemeanor charges.

Chattanooga police Sgt. Jerri Weary said patrol officers went to the home at Wheeler Avenue and Cooley Street with warrants for a weekend traffic accident.

The man's girlfriend was in the home attempting to calm him until 2 p.m., Weary said. She is now speaking with police.

The man has not yet been identified by police, but has a criminal and mental health history, Weary said.
