Choo Choo Chorus salutes city’s riverboats

A concert billed as “the biggest barbershop show ever in Chattanooga” will be presented Saturday by members of the Chattanooga Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

Joining the Choo Choo Chorus will be members of the 70-man Confederate Harmony Brigade, described by local singer Steve Wixson as “a group of longtime barbershoppers from all over the Southeast who don’t get enough singing in their own choruses and gather once a year to sing and fellowship.”

“They have wanted to come to Chattanooga for several years, and this is the year for us,” Wixson said.

SINGERS WANTED

The Choo Choo Chorus meets at 7 p.m. Mondays at All Saints Academy, 310 E. Eighth St. All voice ranges are needed, and singers are not required to read music.

The group includes several outstanding quartets, according to Wixson. Among them are The Real McCoy, which competed in this year’s international barbershop finals in Philadelphia, and Loose Change, a comedic quartet based in Birmingham.

Wixson said the program would be a salute to Chattanooga’s riverboats, the Southern Belle and Delta Queen. The stage set is a partial, scale replica of the Southern Belle.

Songs will include “Cruising Down the River,” “River of No Return,” “Shenandoah” and “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).”

The evening’s finale will feature more than 100 voices united in song.

“The show concludes with both the Choo Choo Chorus and the Brigade singing an arrangement of ‘America the Beautiful,’ written soon after 9/11, supported by a PowerPoint presentation,” he said. “It will be a most powerful ending.”
