A concert saxophonist who defies classical conventions fills the first slot in the 2010-11 season of Covenant Arts performances at Covenant College.

Kuang-Hao Huang
Ashu, 26, acknowledges that most people have never heard a saxophone played as he plays it, but he’s out to change minds about the instrument’s capabilities.
“It’s really an incredible instrument,” he says on his website.
“It can play with such emotional intensity, sing like a voice and effortlessly project in the largest of halls. It’s capable of a lot of really beautiful things.”
Ashu has won major international and national competitions traditionally won by pianists and violinists. His repertoire ranges from original works by Ibert, Debussy and Villa-Lobos to his own arrangements of Piazzolla, Rachmaninoff and Morricone.
