Jericho Brass Band hits opening notes

The Jericho Brass Band, a traditional brass band entering its 13th year, will open its 2010-11 season Sunday in Collegedale.

The ensemble, winner of a 2011 George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, is made up of volunteers from all walks of life.

“What we all have in common is our love of brass band music and the desire to share and keep alive the music of brass bands,” according to a statement in a news release from the group.

The band is under the direction of Frank Hale, retired Hixson High School band director. Sunday’s concert will include “a little bit of jazz, Celtic, Latin and, of course, a great Sousa march, ‘Washington Post.’ ”

The one-hour performance starts at 4 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in the 9300 block of Apison Pike. (The park is accessible only by foot; walk the greenway path across from Collegedale Public Library, 9318 Apison Pike.)
