THP names 3 new command staffers

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Highway Patrol today announced the promotions of three members of the administrative command staff under newly selected Colonel Tracy Trott.

The THP announced in a news release today that J.R. Perry has been promoted to lieutenant colonel over the Field Operations Bureau.

Perry, 58, is a 33-year veteran of the Highway Patrol and was executive officer to Col. Mike Walker, who retired last week.

Dereck Stewart, 45, has been promoted to major and executive officer, replacing Perry. Stewart has served since 2007 as captain over the Department of Safety Research, Planning and Development Division. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2009.

Richard “Dean” Hurley, 56, has been promoted to major over the Field Operations Bureau-East. He has been captain of the Fall Branch district in East Tennessee since 2006. He also teaches criminal justice courses at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.
